Park Geun-hye bashes opposition's flip-flopping before elections

Ruling party leader Park Geun-hye launched a strongly-worded salvo against the main opposition party Monday, accusing the rival camp of making a brazen about-face on the free trade agreement with the United States and other major policies.

Her remark was aimed at the opposition Democratic United Party's campaign promise to scrap the trade deal after winning the April polls and the December presidential vote unless Washington agrees to renegotiate before the pact goes into effect.

"I don't see the current opposition party as qualified to judge the Saenuri Party," Park, who leads the Saenuri Party's emergency council, said during a panel debate with a group of broadcast journalists.

Whlie in power during the previous administration, Park said, the opposition party was criticized so much for policy failures that members of the party even called themselves a "wiped-out clan."

"Those people gathered again and keep changing stances on policies the previous administration pursued. I think this is really something that should be subject to judgement by the people," she said.

The opposition party was born out of a merger in December last year between the Democratic Party and a novice party made by close aides to late President Roh Moo-hyun to put up a united front in the upcoming elections.

Park reiterated her support for the trade pact with the U.S., saying it will be beneficial to South Korea's interests.

"Once the S. Korea-U.S. FTA takes effect and is implemented in our real life, I think more people will support it," Park added.

The trade deal, first signed in 2007 and modified in December 2010, was approved by the ruling party-controlled parliament in November last year despite strong objection from opposition parties.

While talks are under way between Seoul and Washington to fine-tune the schedule for the pact's implementation, South Korean Trade Minister Park Tae-ho earlier said the pact will be effective in a month or so in the two countries.

With the two major elections looming, Park was positive about joining forces with other conservative groups and prominent figures.

"I think we can unite (with conservative forces) as far as they share the same values and visions," Park said, without elaborating on the specifics of her plan.

Park also left room for an alliance with star software entrepreneur Ahn Cheol-soo, a surging presidential hopeful not affiliated with any political party, though she saw the matter as open to further question.

"I think it would be good if (Ahn) could join us," Park said with a smile. "But I don't know what will happen in the future."

Ahn, who is popular among young voters for his clean and upright image, gained fame in the 1990s after he established the anti-virus software firm and let others use some of its products for free. The medical doctor-turned-professor has received offers from both the ruling and opposition camps, but remains vague about his political ambitions. (Yonhap News)

새누리당 박근혜 비상대책위원장은 20일 정권심 판론을 제기하는 민주통합당 등 야당에 대해 "현재의 야당이 새누리당의 심판 주체 라고 보지 않는다"고 말했다.

박 비대위원장은 이날 세종문화회관에서 열린 방송기자클럽 토론회에서 이같이 지적한 뒤 "그 분들 스스로 자신을 폐족이라고 부를 정도로 국민의 심판을 받은 분 들인데 그 분들이 다시 모여 지난 정권에서 추진했던 정책에 대해 계속 말을 바꾸는 것, 이것이야말로 심판의 대상이 되는 게 아닌가 생각한다"고 강조했다.

그는 "심판한다는 것은 잘못된 것을 바로잡자는 것인데 여야 정당을 떠나 여당 일 때 말 다르고 야당일 때 말 다르고, 자신들이 추구했던 정책에 대해 말을 뒤집고 하는 것은 정말 바로 잡아야 할 문제"라면서 "우리 새누리당에서는 정치의 이런 형태를 바로잡겠다고 다짐하고 있다"고 강조했다.

그는 특히 한미FTA(자유무역협정)에 대해 "노무현 정부 시절 이것을 처음 추진했는데 그때에도 도움이 된다고 생각했고 지금도 도움이 된다고 생각한다"면서 "한 미FTA가 발효돼 실생활에 효과가 퍼지게 되면 많은 분이 지지하지 않을까 생각한다"고 자신했다.

박 비대위원장은 또 "지금 새누리당이 새롭게 거듭나고 있다"면서 "과거의 잘못 과 완전히 단절하고 새로 태어나기 위해 과감한 쇄신을 하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

그는 과거와의 단절 의미에 대해 "(현 정부와의) 인위적인 결별이 아니라 (쇄신) 정책을 추진하는 과정에서 자연히 달라질 수 밖에 없다고 생각한다"면서 "사실 역대 정권 말기마다 대통령 탈당이 반복됐는데 그것으로 과연 해답이 됐는냐를 생각해 본다"고 밝혔다.

이는 이명박 정부와 차별화, 단절을 시도하되 이 대통령의 탈당에 대해서는 부정적 입장을 밝힌 것으로 해석된다.

야권의 유력 대선후보 중 한 명인 안철수 서울대 융합과학기술대학원장에 대해선 "같이 할 수 있으면 좋다고 생각한다"면서 `적극적으로 연대를 모색할 수도 있느냐'는 질문에 웃으면서 "앞으로 어떻게 될지는 아무도 모른다"고 답변했다.

아울러 보수연대에 필요성에 대해서도 "추구하는 가치와 방향이 같으면 얼마든 지 같이 할 수 있다고 생각한다"면서 "같이 하는 게 바람직하지 않은가 생각하는데 구체적인 방법이나 일정은 좀 더 협의나 논의를 해야 할 상황이지 지금 명확하게 어 떻게 될 것이라고 말하기는 어려울 것 같다"고 설명했다.

박 비대위원장은 공천 탈락자들의 이탈로 인한 보수분열 가능성과 관련해선 "국 민이 보기에 이것이 정말 무리한 공천이라든가 잘못된 공천이라고 하면 모르지만, 원칙과 기준에 따라 국민의 눈높이에 맞춘 공천이 된다면 별로 그것이 큰 역할을 못 할 것으로 본다"고 자신했다.

그는 또 신공항 문제와 관련, "신공항은 현 정부에서 폐기한 정책인데 저는 국가경쟁력 차원에서 꼭 필요한 인프라라고 생각하고 있다"면서 "반드시 추진하겠다"고 약속했다.

그는 이어 당헌ㆍ당규상의 경제민주화 조항과 관련, "`대기업 때리기'가 아니다 "면서 "경제민주화는 대기업의 긍정적 측면은 최대한 살리고 부정적 측면은 최소화하자는 생각에서 출발하고 있다"고 강조했다.

이밖에 박 비대위원장은 정수장학회 논란에 대해 "2005년 이사장직을 그만둔 후로 저와는 관련이 없다. 이 문제와 관련해선 정수장학회에서 분명한 입장표명이 있어야 하지 않을까 생각한다"고 밝혔고, 대북특사 요청시 수용 여부에 대해선 "남북 관계 발전에 도움이 된다면 할 수 있는 모든 것을 해야 한다고 생각한다"고 말했다.
