North Korea has been preparing for a large military parade for this spring since before the death of its former leader Kim Jong-il, a government official here said Monday.
"North Korea has been practicing a military parade, with troops and equipment on hand, at the Mirim Airbase near Pyongyang," the official said. "This began before the death of Kim Jong-il last year (in December)."
The official added the North's military may be targeting the 100th birthday of the country's founder, Kim Il-sung, on April 15, or the 80th founding anniversary of the military on April 25.
Sources said the rehearsals have mobilized active and reserve troops, and also new armored vehicles and short- and mid-range missiles.
"North Korea stages a parade on national holidays such as the founding anniversary of the military," the official added.
"Considering the pace and the size of the rehearsals, the parade will likely be held in April rather than Feb. 16, Kim Jong-il's birthday." (Yonhap News)

북한이 장기간 퍼레이드 연습을 하는 것으로 미뤄 김일성 생일 100주년(4월15일 )과 인민군 창건 80주년(4월25일) 등을 기념하기 위한 행사로 분석된다고 이 당국자 는 설명했다.
퍼레이드 연습에는 현역 군인과 예비역으로 구성된 노농적위대를 비롯한 신형 폭풍전차와 장갑차, KN-02와 무수단 등 단ㆍ중거리 미사일 등도 동원된 것으로 알려졌다.
정부 당국자는 "북한은 군 창건일 등 국가기념일에 열병식(퍼레이드)을 하고 있다"면서 "현재 진행 중인 연습 속도와 규모 등을 볼 때 김정일 생일인 2월 16일 보다는 4월에 열릴 가능성이 높다"고 덧붙였다.
