N. Korean ambassador to Germany caught illegally fishing: German media

North Korea's top envoy to Germany was caught illegally fishing earlier this week, but could not be detained due to his diplomatic immunity, a German magazine said Thursday (local time).

Ambassador Ri Si-hong, who took office in September, was fishing on the Havel River in Berlin Sunday when local police officers asked to see his license, according to local news reports cited by the German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel.

Fishing without a license is punishable with up to two years in prison or a 200 euro fine in the European country.

Ri responded that he was the North Korean ambassador, and the officers confirmed his identity through their own records of his personal details and a photograph, the news reports said.

When asked to stop the illegal activity, "the ambassador politely acknowledged (the request) with a smile and continued with the offense," Der Spiegel quoted the reports as saying.

Berlin police confirmed the offense but declined to identify the person involved. (Yonhap News)

북한 리시홍 독일주재 대사가 현지 강가에서 불법 낚시를 하다 경찰에 적발됐다고 독일의 매체들이 보도했다.

20일 독일의 유력 시사주간지 슈피겔이 현지언론을 인용해 19일(현지시각) 전한 내용에 따르면 리 대사는 지난 일요일(15일) 서베를린의 스판다우 지역 하벨강가에서 면허증 없이 낚시를 하다 경찰에 적발됐다.

독일에서는 불법낚시를 하다 적발되면 200유로의 벌금을 내야 한다.

당시 경찰은 리 대사에게 낚시 면허증을 제시하라고 요구했지만, 리 대사는 자신이 북한대사라고만 밝히고 여권 등 신분증은 보여주지 않았다.

경찰은 북한대사의 사진과 인물정보 등을 조회하고서야 불법낚시꾼이 북한대사 라는 사실을 확인했다고 슈피겔은 전했다.

또 리 대사는 불법낚시를 하지 말라는 경찰의 제지에도 불법낚시를 계속 했고, 경찰은 리 대사의 외교관 면책특권 때문에 더는 제지할 수 없었다고 이 매체는 덧붙였다.

리 대사는 작년 6월 신임 독일대사에 임명됐다.

그는 2003년 6월 영국 주재 대리대사 자격으로 영국의 기독교계 인권옹호 단체인 세계기독연대(CSW)의 서한을 접수한 인물로, 오랫동안 유럽을 담당해온 것으로 추정된다.
