Alleged rape scandal rocks Brazil's top TV reality show

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Police are investigating a cast member of Brazil's most popular reality TV show, "Big Brother Brazil," for allegedly raping a fellow contestant.

Early Sunday, after a party that was scripted as part of the show, contestant Daniel Echaniz, 31, is alleged to have had sex with Monique Amin, 23, as cameras rolled. Both have denied that to police, they said Tuesday.

"Both of them did confirm they had consumed alcoholic drinks and that they were aware of their surroundings, and they confirmed touching each other under a comforter," said policeman Antonio Nunes.

Police took the contestants' underwear and sheets from the show set, and the host voted Daniel off for "inappropriate behavior."

The party was televised on Brazil's Globo TV, and showed Echaniz, a model, and Amin, a student, kissing and caressing each other, and another image shows Echaniz under the sheets presumably having sex with Amin who appears not to move.

Amin has said she did not recall a sexual act taking place, local media reported.

Network officials told local media that authorities were investigating, because Amin apparently was asleep.

Brazilians for years have been glued to the country's top reality show which awards a prize worth 830,000 dollars to the winner.

7분 분량의 베드신 비디오가 17일 인터넷에 유포되자 방송국은 남자 모델을 쫓아냈고 경찰은 수사 요청을 받았다.

경찰은 리얼리티 쇼의 세트에 있을 수 있는 증거를 모았으며, 거기에는 이불 시트도 포함됐다고 경찰 대변인은 말했다.

"빅 브러더" 프로는 큰 집에 한 그룹이 외부 세계와 절연된 채 같이 사는 가운데 그 모습이 텔레비젼 카메라에 계속 찍히는 쇼다. 동거자들은 정기적으로 축출될 사람을 뽑는데 끝까지 남아 있는 사람이 승리자로 상금을 탄다. 세계 각국에서 약간 변형된 판을 만들어 방영하고 있다.

야간 카메라에 찍힌 이미지로 볼 때 여자가 잠들었지는 확실치 않다. 비디오에서 그녀는 거의 움직임이 없었다. 브라질 언론들은 그녀가 자기 위해 침대에 가기 전 파티에서 술을 마셔 정신을 잃어버렸다고 보도하고 있다.

그녀의 어머니는 "의심할 것 없이, 내 딸은 잠들어 버렸다"며 정신을 잃어버린 상태였음을 확신한다고 신문에 말했다.
