Ahn Cheol-soo heads for U.S. to meet Bill Gates

Ahn Cheol-soo headed for San Francisco on Sunday to meet Microsoft founder Bill Gates to receive advice on charitable foundations and discuss the latest trends in information technology with other IT moguls.

Ahn, who currently teaches at the Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology, embarked on his trip to visit prestigious universities in Silicon Valley in search of new staff for the graduate school.

His trip has drawn attention as it follows the announcement by Ahn, the founder of the nation’s largest anti-computer virus software firm AhnLab Inc., of his plan t o donate half of his 37 percent stake in the firm. It is estimated to be worth about 300 billion won ($260 million).

Upon his departure, Ahn said he would put his donation plans into practice later this month or early next month.

“I have my own plans and I think (meeting with Gates) will provide a good opportunity to make a decision,” Ahn told reporters. Asked about his plans for political activities, Ahn said he was busy with school affairs and forming a charitable foundation.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is the world’s largest philanthropic organization and funds programs on health, development and education in developing nations and the United States.

The medical doctor-turned-entrepreneur earlier said that he wants to help educate students from low-income families and give them the opportunity to move up the social ladder.

In addition to meeting with Gates, Ahn will meet with global IT company officials, including Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, home to many of the world’s largest technology corporations, his aides said.

The 50-year-old has no prior experience in politics, but he is hugely popular among young voters for his clean and upright image.

There is widespread speculation that he may consider running for president in the December race, though he has remained vague about his plans.

안철수 "정치참여, 어려움 이길지 고민"

야권의 유력 대권 주자로 떠오른 안철수 서울 대 융합과학기술대학원장은 8일 정치 참여 여부와 관련해 "열정을 갖고 계속 어려운 일을 이겨나갈 수 있을지를 고민하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

안 원장은 이날 미국 샌프란시스코로 출국하기에 앞서 인천공항에서 연합뉴스 기자와 만나 "정치와 사회기여 방법을 고민하고 있느냐"는 질문에 "그렇다"며 이같 이 말했다.

그는 또 "어떤 선택이 의미가 있는가. (국민에게) 도움을 줄 수 있는 일인가. (내가) 균형을 잡고 할 수 있는가를 생각한다"고 고민의 지점을 풀어놓았다.

그는 "의사를 그만둘 때는 바이러스를 이미 오래 연구해서 열정을 갖고 잘할 수 있다고 확신한데다, 바이러스 분야는 사람이 없지만 의사들은 많아 결정을 쉽게 내 렸다"면서 "그러나 이것(정치 참여)은 다른 것 같다"고 말했다.

아울러 그는 "정치는 이미 많은 분이 하고 있는데다, 이전에 내가 하던 일과는 좀 다른 것 같다"면서 "정치에 대해서는 `게스워크'(guesswork.짐작)만 하고 있다.

상상밖에는 방법이 없다"고 털어놓았다.

나아가 그는 "국민의 기대가 무엇인지 파악하는 게 중요하다"면서 "국민의 기대 사항은 단순하지 않고 복합적인 것 같다"고 말했다.

안 원장은 `대권주자 여론조사 1위'라는 질문에 "정치에 아직 발을 디딘 사람은 아니라서, 여론조사에 대해 개인적으로 큰 관심은 없다"고 말했다.

이어 각계각층의 인사들과 정치에 함께 참여할 생각이 없느냐는 질문에 "우선 제가 결정이 돼야 다른 사람들에게 이야기를 하지 결정을 안 했는데 다른 사람에게 이야기를 할 수가 있겠느냐"고 말했다.

이에 앞서 공항에서 별도로 기자들과 만난 자리에서는 "이번 출장에서는 (정치

참여를) 고민하지 않는다. 정치에 대한 고민을 하려 했다면 워싱턴으로 가지 않겠는 가"라며 "기부재단과 학교 일부터 먼저 마무리 짓는 게 우선순위고, 그 후 나머지 생각을 정리해야 할 것"이라고 말했다.

또 "평생 이룬 것의 절반을 바쳐서 함께 살아가는 사회에 도움이 되고자 진정성 을 갖고 하는 데 그것 자체가 바로 서는 게 가장 중요하다"고 말했다.

그는 정치권의 쇄신 바람에 대해 "아직 진정성을 느끼기는 이르다. 선거 때만이 아니라 상시적으로 해야 진정성이 있는 것"이라며 "나름대로의 쇄신 노력이 평소보 다 강도가 쎈 데, 국민이 원하는 바를 지속적으로 살펴보고, 현실에서 구현하기 위 한 지속적인 노력을 해야 한다"고 말했다.

기성 정치권에 대해서는 "시민의 한 사람으로 바뀔 것이라는 열망을 갖고 있다"

면서 "올해와 내년 굉장히 거대한 어려움이 밀어닥칠 텐데, 이제는 내부에서 힘을 합쳐 외부와 싸울 때"라고 주문했다.

총선과 관련해선 "국민의 의사가 정말 정직하고 확실하게 반영될 수 있는 민주 주의의 꽃인 만큼, 많은 것이 바뀌고 좋은 쪽으로 변할 수 있는 계기가 됐으면 좋겠 다"고 말했다.

안 원장은 융합과학기술대학원 교수를 채용하기 위한 목적으로 출국해 시애틀에 서 만나 기부재단에 대해 조언을 듣고, 샌프란시스코에서는 구글의 CEO인 에릭 슈미 트를 만나 IT 환경 변화에 대해 대화를 나눌 예정이다.
