Court grants divorce to woman suffering from husband's nit-picking

The Seoul Family Court said Saturday it has granted divorce to a housewife and ordered her husband to pay her compensation, finding him responsible for ruining the relationship with his constant belittling comments.

The 37-year-old wife, identified only by her surname Park, filed for divorce, claiming she could not continue the marriage because her husband kept finding fault with the way she cooks, shops, irons and does other housework through written memos and mobile phone text messages for seven years.

On Saturday, the court said that it granted the wife's request and ordered the 46-year-old husband, identified only by his surname Kim, to pay the wife 15 million won (US$13,587) in compensation, saying his fault-finding attitude made her "live under anxiety and tension."

아내에게 수시로 메모를 남겨 잔소리를 한 남편의 행동은 이혼 사유가 된다는 법원 판결이 나왔다.

서울가정법원 가사3부(박종택 부장판사)는 박모(37·여)씨가 남편 김모(46)씨를 상대로 낸 이혼 및 재산분할 청구소송에서 "두 사람은 이혼하고 남편은 아내에게 위 자료 1천500만원을 지급하라"고 판결했다고 29일 밝혔다.

재판부는 "김씨가 수시로 메모와 문자메시지로 지적을 해 아내를 불안과 긴장 속에 살게 했다"면서 이혼 책임이 남편에게 있다고 판단했다.

1999년 김씨와 결혼해 전업주부로 살아온 박씨는 남편이 학원강사로 일하기 시 작한 2003년부터 밤늦게 귀가해 "김치 쉬겠다. 오전에 뭐한 건가", "주름 한 줄로 다려줄 것" 등 살림살이에 일일이 간섭하는 메모와 문자메시지를 남기자 참다 못해 결혼 7년만에 이혼 소송을 냈다.
