More than 230,000 habitual drunk drivers nationwide were caught more than three times in the last 11 years, a police report showed Thursday.

In a report submitted for a parliamentary audit, the National Police Agency said that about 3.2 million drivers were caught driving drunk between 2000 and 2010.

This figure means that 12 offenders per every 100 license holders were caught at least once for driving while intoxicated in the last decade, the NPA said. Nine out of 10 offenders were male.

Among them, 232,712 were caught more than three times in the cited period, while 44 were charged with driving under the influence more than 10 times, it noted, raising concern over alcohol-related accidents by repeat offenders.

Under current law, those charged with drunk driving more than three times lose their licenses and are banned from applying for a new one for the next two years. (Yonhap News)
