Popular boy band member avoids marijuana smoking charges

SEOUL, Oct. 5 (Yonhap) -- A member of the popular boy band Big Bang has been found to have illegally smoked marijuana but was released without an indictment because he smoked only a tiny amount, prosecutors said Wednesday.

During a recent interrogation, the singer whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong admitted to having smoked marijuana at a club in Japan in May while he was on a performance trip, according to the prosecutors.

The prosecution's test of Kwon's hair in July verified his use of the banned drug, the prosecutors added.

"I smoked a cigarette, which a random Japanese guy gave to me in a Japanese club. I suspected it to be marijuana since it smelled different, but I smoked it anyway," G-Dragon was quoted by the prosecutors as saying during the interrogation.

Given that the singer inhaled just a small amount and prosecutors detected only a meager level of marijuana components in the singer's body, the prosecution did not indict him, they said.

G-Dragon's expression of remorse and confession also helped him avoid an indictment that would lead to a court trial, the prosecution noted.

Under South Korean law, marijuana users can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail or fined up to 50 million won ($42,000).

인기 아이돌그룹 '빅뱅' 멤버 지드래곤(본명 권지용•23)이 대마초를 흡연했다가 검찰에 적발된 것으로 확인됐다.

서울중앙지검 강력부(김회종 부장검사)는 대마초를 흡연한 혐의(마약류 관리에 관한 법률 위반)로 빅뱅의 지드래곤을 기소유예 처분했다고 5일 밝혔다.

검찰에 따르면 지드래곤은 지난 5월 중순께 일본에서 대마초를 피웠고, 지난 7월 검찰에서 모발 검사를 한 결과 양성으로 판정됐다. 지드래곤은 공연을 위해 일본 방문 중 모 클럽에서 대마초를 흡연했다고 검찰 조사에서 자백한 것으로 전해졌다.

지드래곤은 "일본의 한 클럽에서 이름을 모르는 일본 사람이 준 담배 한 대를 피웠는데 냄새가 일반 담배와 달라 대마초로 의심이 들었지만 조금 피운 것은 사실"이라고 진술했다고 검찰 관계자는 전했다.

빅뱅은 지난 5월10일부터 19일까지 일본 오사카와 지바, 나고야 등 3개 도시에서 8회에 걸쳐 일본 투어 공연을 했다.

검찰은 지드래곤이 상습 투약이 아닌 초범인데다 흡연량도 적어 마약사범 양형 처리 기준에 미달한 수준의 성분이 검출됐고, 대학생인 점을 고려해 기소유예 처분을 내렸다고 밝혔다.

기소유예는 범죄 혐의는 인정되지만 여러 정황과 연령, 범행 동기, 반성 여부 등을 종합적으로 고려해 기소를 하지 않는 처분이다.

검찰 관계자는 "지드래곤이 조사 과정에서 자백을 했고, 진지하게 반성하는 태도를 보였다"고 말했다.

지드래곤은 지난 2009년 12월 한 국내 공연에서 성행위를 연상시키는 춤 동작으로 선정성 논란을 일으켜 작년 3월 입건유예 처분을 받은 바 있다.
