Hand gestures replacing keys, power switches

A Taiwanese scientist has developed technology that allows doors to be unlocked with just a wave of the hand rather than with traditional keys, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.

A researcher at the Technology and Science Institute of Northern Taiwan said Saturday they have invented an "invisible key" that allows gestures to be preset that can unlock doors.

The creation by Tsai Yao-Pin, an instructor of Computer and Communication Engineering (CCE) at TSINT, earned him a gold medal at 2011 Taipei International Invention Show and Technomart that took place Sept.29 - Oct.2.

Tsai was quoted by CAN as saying the "invisible key" uses triaxial accelerometer technology for door locks and uses a single-chip controller as the core control of the system.

Aside from unlocking doors, the technology could also be used to turn home appliances off and on.

한 대만 과학자가 열쇠가 없이도 손 움직임만으로 문을 여는 기술을 개발했다.

북대만과학기술연구소(TSINT) 차이야오빈(蔡耀斌) 연구원은 이 같은 독창적인 기술로 2일 끝난 '2011 타이베이 국제발명전'에서 최우수상을 받았다고 대만 중앙통신사가 3일 전했다.

차이 연구원은 닌텐도 비디오 게임 등에 활용되는 입체적인 움직임을 감지하는 기술을 응용한 것으로 전해졌다.

그는 "앞으로는 열쇠를 가지고 다니는 것을 잊어버리는 걱정을 하지 않아도 된 다"고 말했다.

이 기술은 가전제품을 켜고 끄는 데에도 활용될 수 있다고 차이 연구원은 설명했다.
