Right-wing lawyer drops Seoul mayoral bid

A right-wing lawyer said Wednesday that he has decided to pull out of the Seoul mayor race due to his lackluster approval rating and conflicts over his campaign vision among supporters.

Lee Seog-yeon had been considered as a potential contender against an independent front-runner in the liberal bloc, Park Won-soon, as the two lawyers had similar backgrounds of leading the nation's major civic organizations.

Though the 57-year-old Lee had received offers by the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) to join the party primary, Lee said last week he would run without any party affiliation. But he failed to draw more support than single-digit approval ratings in recent polls.

"It is true that I was shocked by my low approval ratings," Lee told Yonhap News by phone. "I felt that I fall far short of reaching to citizens and arousing their sympathy."

Lee played major roles in the Citizens Coalition for Economic Justice, the nation's largest civic organization monitoring unfair business practices, in the 1990s and won a legal battle to block the capital relocation plan under the late president Roh Moo-hyun.

His campaign has been supported by right-wing activists and groups that have grown uneasy over GNP's efforts to expand the welfare budget and reconcile with North Korea.

Lee said he will confirm his decision as early as Thursday after consulting with his supporters.

Rep. Na Kyung-won of the GNP effectively becomes the only candidate in the conservative ruling camp to run for the Oct. 26 election against a unified candidate from the liberal bloc.

In the opposition camp, Park Won-soon and Rep. Park Young-sun of the Democratic Party are running campaigns to become the unified candidate in the liberal bloc. The ultimate runner will be decided in a party convention slated for Sept. 3. (Yonhap News)

이석연 불출마 가닥..서울시장선거 3파전 압축

10ㆍ26 서울시장 보궐선거에서 보수진영 '시민후보'로 나선 이석연 변호사(전 법제처장)가 28일 사실상 출마포기를 결심하면 서 선거전의 구도가 출렁이고 있다.

이 변호사의 불출마 가닥으로 보수진영의 후보가 한나라당 최고위원인 나경원 후보 1명으로 좁혀지면서 선거전은 여권의 나 후보와 야권의 민주당 전 정책위의장 인 박영선 후보 및 시민사회 박원순 후보간 3파전으로 일단 압축됐다.

헌법정신의 수호와 참보수를 기치로 한나라당과는 거리를 둔 채 차기 서울시장 선거전에 뛰어든 이 변호사는 지난 19일 보수성향의 시민단체들이 지원하는 '시민후 보'로 확정되며 일약 주목을 받았다.

그러나 이후 각종 여론조사에서 지지율이 답보상태를 면치 못하자 출마포기를 결심한 것으로 전해졌다. 그의 포기로 이 후보를 앞세워 내년 총선과 대선에서 보수 시민세력을 결집하려던 재야 보수진영의 '정치실험'도 차질을 빚게됐다.

며 출마포기 의사를 밝힌 뒤 "다만 최종 결론은 나를 지지해 준 시민단체와 논의해 봐야 하며, 늦어도 내일 중으로는 최종 입장을 밝힐 것"이라고 말했다.

이에 따라 서울시장 선거를 둘러싼 초유의 '시민후보'간 경쟁은 물건너가게 됐 다.

이 변호사의 탈락으로 3파전으로 좁혀진 선거전은 한나라당 나 후보와 다음달 3 일 경선을 통해 탄생할 민주당 박 후보와 시민사회 박 후보간 단일후보와의 대결로 가닥이 잡힐 전망이다.

전날 한나라당 후보로 확정된 나 후보는 28일 예비후보 등록을 시작으로 서울시 복지서비스 수준의 균질화를 비롯한 복지정책 발표와 민심행보에 착수했으며 조만간 박근혜 전 대표를 찾아가 지원을 요청하기로 했다.

반면 민주당과 시민사회의 두 박 후보는 다음달 3일의 야권 후보단일화 경쟁의 승리를 1차 관문이라고 보고 통합후보 경선 승리에 집중하고 있다.

민주당 박 후보는 여론조사상 지지도가 상승 추세에 있다고 판단하고 국민참여 경선에서 역전의 발판을 마련하기 위해 `민주당 후보론'을 내세워 총력전을 벌이고 있으며, 시민사회 박 후보는 각종 여론조사의 1위를 내세우며 '대세론' 확산에 주력 하고 있다.

이런 가운데 여야의 공세는 여론조사에서 선두를 달리고 있는 시민사회 박 후보 에게 집중되고 있다.

박 후보는 대기업 사외이사로 재직하고 8억6천만원의 기부금을 받은 것과 부인 인테리어 업체가 대기업으로부터 공사를 수주한 것과 관련해 여야의 공세가 이어지 자 기부금은 모두 희망제작소에 기부했다고 해명하며 '무분별한 정치공세의 중단'을 촉구하는 등 정면대응으로 맞서고 있다.
