BASF Korea appoints new head

BASF Korea, the local unit of the global chemicals group, said Thursday it has promoted Shin Woo-sung, head of its human resources division, to new chief executive.

Shin, 54, will replace Cho Chin-wook, whose five-year term is expiring on Sept. 30.

A graduate of Seoul National University, Shin entered the chemicals company in 1984 and has held a slew of administrative and operational posts at the Seoul office and the company’s headquarters in Ludwigshafen, southwest of Germany.

Since it branched out to the Korean market in 1954, and the company transformed its local branch into one of Korea’s top 10 chemicals firms.

Under Cho’s term, sales of the Korean unit swelled to top 3.4 trillion ($3.08 billion) won last year from around 1.5 trillion won in 2006.

The firm currently operates production facilities in Ulsan, Yeosu, Gunsan and Ansan.
