New iPhone iteration lost in a bar: CNET

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) -- Technology news website CNET on Wednesday reported that a new version of Apple’s coveted iPhone went astray in a bar in a replay of an embarrassing loss that took place last year.

An Apple employee lost a yet-to-be released iPhone model in a tequila bar in the San Francisco Mission District in July, according to CNET.

Apple electronically tracked the device to a San Francisco home but the resident denied knowing anything about the missing iPhone, which may have been sold for a couple of hundred dollars at online auction house eBay, CNET said.

The report prompted speculation whether the missing iPhone was a next-generation expected to be unveiled by Apple in September or October.

Word of another unreleased iPhone model disappearing in a bar came just weeks after prosecutors decided not to pursue criminal charges against Gizmodo technology bloggers who got hold of a lost iPhone 4 prototype last year.

Early last year, Gizmodo published pictures and details of the iPhone prototype after buying it for $5,000 from a man who claimed to have found it in a beer garden where it was lost by an Apple software engineer.

애플직원, 차기 아이폰 견본 술집에서 분실해

애플 직원이 가지고 있던 차기 아이폰 견본이 분실됐다고 미국의 IT전문매체인 씨넷이 이 사건 수사와 관련된 소식통을 인용해 31일 보도했다.

미국 현지 언론들은 씨넷의 보도 사실을 전하면서 지난해 아이폰4 견본 유출 사 건과 거의 유사해 IT업계가 황당해하고 있다고 전했다.

씨넷의 보도에 따르면 올 9월 말 또는 10월 초 출시될 것으로 예상되는 차기 아이폰 견본은 지난 7월 말 샌프란시스코 미션 지구에 있는 멕시코 레스토랑 겸 술집인 ‘카바22’에서 분실됐으며, 애플의 보안팀이 며칠 간 이 레스토랑에 찾아와 이 기기를 찾기 위해 한바탕 소동을 벌였다.

이 견본은 그 사이 미국의 생활정보사이트인 크레이스리스트에서 200달러에 팔 린 것으로 전해졌다. 하지만, 이 견본이 사용하는 iOS나 외형 등은 지난해 유출사건 당시 한 언론매체가 이를 구입해 보도했던 것과 달리 아직 알려지지 않고 있다.

애플은 이날 오전 씨넷의 확인요청에 대한 코멘트를 거부했으며 샌프란시스코 경찰도 애플이 분실신고를 하지 않았다고 말했다. 크레이그스리스트도 코멘트 요청 에 응하지 않았다고 씨넷은 덧붙였다.

이 견본이 분실되고 나서 1∼2일이 지난 뒤 애플 측은 샌프란시스코 경찰에 접 촉해 이 기기가 매우 귀중한 것이며, 안전하게 되돌려받기를 원한다고 말했다고 소식통은 전했다.

경찰과 애플 측은 이어 사고 당일 현장에 있었던 20대 청년이 거주하는 샌프란 시스코 버낼 하이츠 인근에 있는 2층 주택에 찾아가 이 청년에게 견본에 대해 묻고 그의 동의하에 집을 수색하기까지 했으나 이를 찾는 데는 실패한 것으로 전해졌다.

소식통은 심지어 경찰 등이 돌아간 후 애플 직원이 이 남자에게 견본만 돌려준다 면 책임을 묻지 않고 보상을 하겠다고 했으나 이 청년은 견본을 가지고 있지 않다고 말했다고 전했다.

아이폰4 유출사건은 지난해 3월 발생했으며, 실리콘밸리 내 레드우드 시내 한 술집에서 브라이언 호건 등 20대 청년 2명이 애플 직원이 놓고 간 아이폰4 견본을 입수한 뒤 이를 IT전문 매체인 기즈모도 5천 달러에 팔았으며, 기즈모도는 이를 보도한 후 사법당국이 수사에 착수하면서 언론의 자유와 관련해 논란이 일었다.
