Arsenal signs South Korea captain Park Chu-young

LONDON (AP) _ Arsenal completed the signing of South Korea captain Park Chu-young from Monaco on Monday and Germany defender Per Mertesacker looked set to follow him as the club strengthens after a dismal start to the Premier League season.

The 26-year-old striker is moving to London after three seasons in France where he scored 25 goals in 91 appearances.

``He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad,'' Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

Arsenal said the deal is subject to the completion of the registration processes and he will have J. Y. Park on the back of his No. 9 shirt as he prefers to be known as ``Ju.''

``It is a dream to be here and I am really proud to be an Arsenal player. Now I just want to show how good I am and prove myself,'' he said. ``In my opinion this is a great club, now I have to show what I can do on the pitch. I will do my best, I will never give up, I will show heart, I will give everything and I hope (the fans) will support me.''

Mertesacker was expected to undergo a medical at Arsenal on Tuesday after Germany coach Joachim Loew gave the Werder Bremen defender permission to leave the national team camp to travel to London.

``Yesterday late in the evening, (Per Mertesacker) came to me and told me that there was an offer (from Arsenal,'' Loew said. ``I told him this morning I'd let him go for a day. I expect him back this evening.''

Wenger's side has collected just one point from its first three league matches and was routed 8-2 by Manchester United on Sunday.

축구 국가대표 공격수 박주영(26)이 잉글랜드 프로축구 아스널에 입단하면서 한국인 선수로 아홉 번째 프리미어리거가 됐다.

엎친 데 덮친 격으로 뉴캐슬과의 시즌 개막전에서는 제르비뉴와 알렉스 송이 각 각 3경기 출장정지 징계를 받았다.

연이은 전력 손실로 아스널은 29일 맨체스터 유나이티드와의 원정에서 2-8 참패 하는 등 1무2패로 리그 하위권에 내려앉아 있다.

하지만 박주영에게는 아스널의 위기가 기회가 됐다.

당장 선발 선수 11명을 꼽기도 어려운 상황이 된 아스널은 이적시장 마감을 앞 두고 즉시 전력감으로 쓸 수 있는 공격수를 찾았고, 프랑스 프로축구 AS모나코에서 세 시즌 동안 91경기에 나서 25골을 넣으며 실력을 인정받은 박주영은 탐나는 자원 일 수밖에 없었다.

박주영 주전 경쟁 전망도 나쁘지만은 않다.

아스널 공격진에는 로빈 판 페르시(네덜란드)와 시오 월콧(잉글랜드)이 주전으 로 버티고 있고 제르비뉴(코트디부아르), 마루아네 샤마크(모로코), 니클라스 벤트너(덴마크) 등도 포지션 경쟁자다.

하지만 내년 1월 아프리카 네이션스컵이 시작되면 샤마크와 제르비뉴가 한달 가까이 자국 대표팀에 합류해야 한다.

지난 시즌 17경기에 출전해 2득점에 그친 벤트너는 꾸준히 이적설이 제기되고 있어 박주영이 한동안 꾸준히 출전 기회를 잡을 가능성이 크다. (연합뉴스)
