Elder accused of sexually abusing children

A celebrated social activist known for helping teenagers and children in need was arrested on Monday for a series of sexual abuse cases.

The offender, only known by his surname Kim, had allegedly taken advantage of teenagers by luring them to his home, saying that he would “instruct students into righteous way with faith,” Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said.

Since 1991, Kim had allegedly sexually abused six boys by ordering them to take off clothes and touching their bodies. Police said that a child was harassed for as long as nine years, or in some cases three siblings were taken advantage of together.

Building his reputation as a social activist, the Christian church elder appeared on several TV programs and also worked as the head of the regional branch of a charity.

Kim had been telling members at his church located at Gyeonggi Province that he would take care of their children’s education in Seoul, and insisted that he would become their guardian.

The police are interviewing other victims, taking into consideration that Kim had allegedly been carrying out the abuse for 20 years.

어려운 청소년을 돕는 선도활동가로 행세하며 20여년에 걸쳐 상습적으로 아동과 청소년을 성추행한 유명 종교인이 경찰에 구속됐다.

서울지방경찰청 생활질서과는 ‘신앙생활을 통해 올바른 길로 선도한다’며 집으로 데려온 청소년들을 상습 성추행한 종교인 김모(61)씨를 성폭력범죄의 처벌 등에 관한법률 위반 혐의로 구속했다고 22일 밝혔다.

불우청소년을 돕는 선도활동가로 널리 알려진 김씨는 1991년 서울 마포구에서 당시 중학교 2학년이던 황모(35)씨 등을 ‘신앙을 통해 선도한다’며 집으로 데려와 옷을 벗게하고 신체부위를 만지는 등 최근까지 21년간 남자 아동과 청소년 6명을 강제추행한 혐의를 받고 있다.

경찰 조사결과 3형제 모두가 김씨에게 추행을 당한 경우도 있으며, 당시 피해자 중 한 명은 유치원생 때부터 9년에 걸쳐 지속적으로 피해를 당한 것으로 드러났다.

경기도 의정부의 모 교회 장로인 김씨는 지역아동지원단체의 서울지부장을 맡는 등 사회적 신분과, 방송 프로그램에 불우청소년을 돕는 활동가 혹은 친환경 다도인으로 여러차례 출연하는 등의 유명세를 범행에 이용한 것으로 조사됐다.

김씨는 교인 등과의 친분으로 만난 이들에게 “지방보다 서울이 교육에 좋다. 아이들을 보내주면 해외여행에 데려가 견문을 넓혀 주겠다”는 말로 꾀어 피해자들을 위탁받아 보호자로 행세하며 자신의 성욕을 채웠던 것으로 나타났다.

경찰은 김씨의 범행이 20여년에 걸쳐 장기간 지속적으로 이뤄졌으며 위탁보호를 했던 청소년이 상당수에 이르는 점으로 미뤄 피해사례가 더 있을 것으로 보고 수사를 계속하고 있다.

경찰은 “사회적 유명세를 이용하거나 봉사 등의 명목으로 피해사실을 신고치 못하게 만드는 성폭력 범죄에 대해 지속적으로 수사해 아동•청소년 보호에 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다. (연합뉴스)
