Widow of shipping firm chief embezzles company fund

Prosecutors indicted the widow of the deceased chairman of an off-shore shipping company for embezzlement.

According to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, the 47-year-old woman surnamed Kim colluded with her husband’s secretary in misappropriating 100 billion won ($92.4 million) between 2001 and 2005.

The chairman died in 2007.

Kim and the secretary deceived the chairman, who showed signs of dementia, by changing the account name and withdrawing huge amounts from the Hong Kong branch of a national bank.

Earlier in June, the secretary was arrested and the prosecution expanded the scope of investigation, uncovering the plot.

However, Kim, who is booked without detention, has denied the charges completely.

서울중앙지검 조사부(배성범 부장검사)는 해외에 거점을 둔 선박회사에서 1천억원대 회삿돈을 빼돌린 혐의(특정경제범죄가중처벌법상 사기)로 H사 김모(2007년 사망) 회장의 부인 김모(47)씨를 불구속 기소했다고 19일 밝혔다.

검찰에 따르면 김씨는 2001년부터 2005까지 남편의 비서였던 K(48.구속기소)씨와 짜고 H사 자금 1천300여억원을 빼돌린 혐의를 받고 있다. 김씨는 사망 당시 70대였던 김 회장이 전처와 결별한 뒤 재혼한 사이였다.

김씨와 비서 K씨는 홍콩, 라이베리아 등을 거점으로 선박회사를 운영하던 김 회장이 2001년부터 뇌경색과 치매 등으로 정신이 혼미해진 틈을 타 예금 인출권자를 회장 부인으로 변경한 뒤 국내 은행의 홍콩지점에서 거액의 회삿돈을 인출한 것으로 전해졌다.

앞서 지난 6월 비서 K씨를 같은 혐의로 구속기소한 검찰은 수사를 확대한 결과 K씨의 배후에 회장 부인이 있었다는 사실을 밝혀내 김씨를 이날 기소했다. 김씨는 그러나 검찰에서 관련 혐의를 전면 부인한 것으로 전해졌다. (연합뉴스)
