Former National Police Agency commissioner general Kang Hee-rak, was on Wednesday sentenced to six years in prison for taking bribes from Yu Sang-bong, a construction site canteen operator and lobbyist.
According to the Seoul Eastern District Court, he was also given a 170 million won fine and will forfeit another 170 million won he took in bribes from Yu.
The former police chief received some 190 million won from Yu in bribes from April 2009 to December 2009 while in office in exchange for helping him win the right to run lucrative makeshift cafeterias at construction sites. Kang served at the top post of the police from 2009 to 2010.
Choi Young, former chief executive of the casino resort Kangwonland, who took 25 million won from Yu, was also sentenced to 30 months in prison.
Prosecutors on Tuesday asked a separate court to sentence Yu to 30 months in jail and ordered a 20 million won forfeit.
