College students busted for growing, selling dope

Two college students were arrested for growing, selling, and consuming marijuana, according to Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

The accused, known only by their surnames Seo and Jang, had sold some 300 grams of home grown marijuana in college campuses.

Having green cards at the United States and Argentina respectively, the two Koreans smuggled seeds from America and had been cultivating them at their house since last year.

After easily accessing to information about how to grow marijuana via Internet, they invested 2 million won ($1,900) to build equipment to start the “business” professionally.

Police said the team sold the finished product for 150 thousand won ($140) per gram.

Seo had been deported from the United States for drug dealing.

Meanwhile another drug dealer, only known as Jung, was caught while attempting to smuggle some meth and marijuana hidden in play dough from the United States was also arrested.

An official from the police said “Koreans who emigrated or went to study abroad in the countries where access to drug sis easier tend to abuse them without any sense of guilt.”

서울지방경찰청 국제범죄수사대는 21일 집에서 대마를 재배해 외국인 유학생 등에게 팔거나 직접 흡입한 혐의(마약류 관리에 관한 법률 위반)로 서모(23)씨 등 2명을 구속했다.

경찰에 따르면 서씨 등은 지난해 7월부터 최근까지 미국에서 들여온 대마 씨앗을 자신들의 자취방에서 길러 얻은 대마 300여ｇ을 교포나 외국인 유학생에게 판매한 혐의를 받고 있다.

각각 미국과 아르헨티나 영주권자로 서울시내 대학에 재학 중인 이들은 인터넷을 통해 대마 재배법을 익혀 화분과 발열기ㆍ비료 등 장비를 갖춰 600여회 흡입할 수 있는 양의 대마를 키운 것으로 조사됐다.

서씨 등이 재배한 대마는 주로 대학가에서 ｇ당 15만원에 거래됐고 이들로부터 대마를 건네받은 교포나 외국인 유학생들은 캠퍼스에서 버젓이 대마를 말아피우기도 했다고 경찰은 전했다.

경찰은 또 국제우편으로 마약을 몰래 들여와 국내에 유통한 혐의로 정모(26.여)씨를 구속했다.

정씨는 지난 1월부터 최근까지 미국에 있는 공급책에게서 완구용 찰흙 등에 숨긴 마약을 우편으로 건네받는 수법으로 히로뽕 7ｇ과 대마 244ｇ을 밀반입, 외국인 유학생 등에게 판 혐의를 받고 있다.

조사결과 정씨는 미국 로스앤젤레스에서 갱 단원으로 활동하다가 마약 판매 혐의로 강제추방된 우모(28.구속)씨와 함께 범행한 것으로 드러났다.

경찰 관계자는 “대마 흡연이 비교적 자유로운 미국 등지에서 온 교포나 유학생들이 별다른 죄의식 없이 마약 범죄를 저지른다”며 “조명과 기온 조절, 환풍장치 관리 등 고도의 기술이 필요한 대마 재배법을 인터넷에서 쉽게 배울 수 있어 이를 막을 수 있는 제도적 장치가 필요하다”고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
