An American fishing tour operator is under a criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, accused of conducting sex tourism in Brazil, according to reports.
The defendant, Richard Schair operated Wet-A-Line Tours until 2009, allegedly using sports fishing expeditions in the Amazon as covers for tourists to have sex with underage girls.
The lawsuit was filed last month by Atlanta law firm King & Spalding and coordinated by human rights organization Equality Now on behalf of four Brazilian women who were the alleged victims of sex trafficking.
The federal complaint contends that most of customers recruited by Schair were affluent Americans, inducing impoverished Brazilian girls with the possibility of earning money.
Brazilian tourist company Santana Ecofish Safari is also under criminal investigations for the same charge. Brazilian federal police reported at least 15 underage girls were coerced into perform sex acts with tourists.
However, Schair has denied the charge while the lawyer of Santana Ecofish Safari has not replied to discuss specifics of the inquiries.

소녀들은 아마조나스 주의 주도(州都)인 마나우스로부터 118㎞ 떨어진 아우타제스 시에 거주하며, 낚시 여행객의 시중을 드는 것으로 알고 동행했다고 이 신문은 전했다.
한편, 신문은 웨트어라인 투어스의 소유주인 리처드 셰어는 섹스관광을 주선한 혐의를 부인하고 있으며, 사건 확인을 위해 산타나 에코피시 사파리 측의 변호인과 접촉을 시도했으나 연락이 이뤄지지 않았다고 덧붙였다.
