The number of foreigners accused of serious crimes such as violence and gambling is increasing, according to National Police Agency.
In the last 3 months, about 8,311 expats were arrested with 341 of them being taken into custody. The figure is marks a more than 26 percent increase from the same period last year.
Accusations of five major crimes of murder, robbery, rape, theft, and violence showed a 23 percent jump. Those accused of gambling increased the most – by 442 percent, with most of the accused coming from China, Vietnam, or Thailand.
The types of delinquency are also increasing as expats are staying in Korea for longer periods than before.
The police said offenses such as unprovoked assaults are also becoming a bigger problem. They arrested 22 Thai gangsters last months for fighting at a Thai club at Hwaseong. Some 11 Chinese people were also accused of taking drugs and behaving violently toward pedestrians.
The majority of the alleged criminals were Chinese, followed by Vietnamese, Mongolians, and Americans.

검거 인원 26.7%↑…폭력범죄 등 활개
폭력과 도박 등 국내 거주 외국인 범죄가 기승을 부리는 것으로 나타났다.
경찰청은 4월5일부터 이달 4일까지 3개월간 외국인 범죄를 집중 단속한 결과 강•폭력사범 등 8천311명을 검거하고 이 중 341명을 구속했다고 7일 밝혔다.
이는 지난해 같은 기간 검거 인원인 6천560명보다 26.7% 많은 수치다. 살인과 강도, 강간, 절도, 폭력 등 5대 범죄 검거 인원도 23.1% 늘어났다.
경찰은 외국인 폭력배의 조직화를 막고자 자금줄이 될 수 있는 폭력•도박 사범을 집중 조사한 결과 폭력 범죄자 검거 인원이 작년 동기 대비 31.6%, 도박은 442.1% 급증했다고 설명했다.
이 기간에 조직폭력의 경우 88명을 검거해 23명을 구속했다. 다만 아직 폭력 조직의 형태를 갖췄다기보다 세력 과시성 집단 패싸움 정도 선에서 그치고 있다고 경찰은 분석했다.
서울 영등포경찰서는 서울 대림동 유흥가에서 보도방을 운영하며 마약을 투약하고 내•외국인을 상대로 집단 폭력을 행사한 조선족 조직폭력배 11명을 지난달 24일 검거하기도 했다.
경찰은 체류 외국인 수가 늘어나면서 여타 폭력 범죄도 큰 폭으로 늘어나고 있으며 청부 폭력이나 묻지마식 집단폭력 등 다양한 유형을 띠고 있다고 분석했다.
경기경찰청 국제범죄수사대는 경기도 화성시 태국나이트클럽인 ‘타이인터’ 주차장에서 자국민을 상대로 묻지마식 폭력을 행사한 태국인 폭력배 22명을 5월에 검거하기도 했다.
중국•베트남•태국인 등은 자국인끼리 도박을 자주 하며 도박장을 중심으로 불법 대부업 및 채권추심, 인질 강도 등 강력범죄가 발생하고 있다고 경찰은 전했다.
검거 인원을 국적별로 나눠보면 중국인이 3천681명으로 가장 많았고 베트남 478명, 몽골 266명, 미국 260명 등 순이었다.
경찰청 관계자는 “외국인 밀집지역을 중심으로 국적별 맞춤형 수사를 진행할 것”이라고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
