Russian scientists expect to meet aliens by 2031

A top Russian astronomer predicted Monday humanity will be able to encounter alien civilizations within the next two decades.

Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, said 10 percent of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth according to reports by the Interfax news agency and Reuters.

If water can be found there, then so can life, he told a news conference. Aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.

"They may have different color skin, but even we have that," he said.

"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," he was quoted as saying at an international forum on extraterrestrial life,

The institute lunched a program in the 1960s to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space, according to Reuters.

"The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilizations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way," he said.

"외계인 20년 내에 만난다"

러시아 과학자들이 외계 문명에 대한 연구를 계속하고 있으며 앞으로 20년 후면 인류가 외계인들을 찾아낼 수 있을 것이라고 러시아 최고 천문학자가 27일 주장했다.

인테르팍스 통신과 로이터 통신에 따르면 러시아 과학아카데미 산하 응용 천문학 연구소 소장 안드레이 핀켈슈테인은 이날 기자회견에서 "지금까지 학자들의 연구에 따르면 우주에서 발견된 1천여 개의 행성 가 운데 10% 정도가 지구와 유사하다"며 "이 행성들에 물이 있다면 생명도 있을 것"이 라고 예상했다.

핀켈슈테인 소장은 "외계인도 우리처럼 두 개의 다리와 두 개의 팔, 머리를 갖고 있을 것"이라고 추정하면서 "피부색이 다를 수도 있지만 그건 지구인도 마찬가지"라고 주장했다.

"모든 우주에 동일하게 적용되는 근본적 법칙이 존재한다"며 "다른 행성에 생명체가 존재하며 20년 후면 우리가 이를 찾아낼 것"이라고 말했다.

그는 "우리가 외계 문명을 탐구해오는 동안 우선적으로 우주로부터 신호가 오기 만을 기다려 왔을 뿐 그 반대는 없었다"고 지적했다. (Herald Online)
