China puts ‘Arirang’ on Chinese heritage list

The Chinese government is claiming to have developed some of Korea’s cultural heritage.

Often causing discord by claiming to be the originators of foreign culture, China this time listed Korean folk song “Arirang” in the third list of their National Intangible Cultural Assets.

“Arirang” is a Korean folk song sung by Koreans all over the globe. Many consider the song a source of national pride. The music was played at the Olympic Games when the two Koreas entered the stadium together during the opening ceremony.

Some Korean instruments and sports were also included. It also listed Korean traditional weddings and clothing back in 2009.

Although it is believed that the measure has been made to protect its ethnic minorities, some argue it is problematic that China considers such culture as Chinese.

中, 아리랑 국가무형문화재 지정

아리랑을 비롯한 조선족 전통 민요와 풍습이 중국 국가 무형문화유산으로 등재됐다고 길림신문 등 중국 언론이 21일 보도했다.

중국 국무원이 최근 발표한 제3차 국가 무형문화유산 목록에 랴오닝(遼寧)성 톄링(鐵嶺)시의 판소리와 연변(延邊)조선족자치주의 아리랑과 가야금, 결혼 예순 돌을 기념하는 회혼례(回婚禮), 씨름 등 5가지 조선족 민요와 풍습이 이름을 올렸다.

2009년에는 조선족 농악무가 국가 무형문화재에 등재됐다.

조선족 전통 풍습인 환갑례와 전통 혼례, 한복, 상모춤 등도 이미 중국 국가 무형문화재로 지정됐다.

2005년 국가 무형문화재에 오른 상모춤은 올해 중국 농민들의 춘제(春節) 축제인 ‘농민 춘제완후이(春節晩會)’에 출연하고 중국 전역에서 순회공연을 펼쳤을 정도로 높은 인기를 얻고 있다.
