LDS church opens singles-only chapel to promote marriage
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, widely known as “Mormons,” has opened a new chapel exclusively for young single members in Crystal City, Virginia,
There are now about 800 members worshiping, attending bible studies, and other activities including pizza parties.
This unique chapel for singles in their 20s to 40s aims to persuade young members to get married via virtuous meetings. After marriage, they move on to more traditional congregations.
The church which emphasizes the importance of family believes that one should be “sealed” with spouses in order to reach the highest level of heaven called the “celestial kingdom.” They believe that the family bond endures even in the afterlife.
They also recommend having a “family night” every Monday in order to enhance the bond among family members.
However, with young members being increasingly more reluctant than older generations to get married, church leaders announced at a recent general conference that young members should not delay marriage or “waste time in idle pursuits.”
Some have criticized that the church puts too much pressure on getting married, a move that sometimes backfires. Jared Whitley, a 33 year-old Mormon told the Washington Post “one of the real problems is that Mormon culture puts a lot of emphasis on going on dates and on getting married, but really not on just being in a relationship.”
Today, there are about 130 million members around the world, with 80,000 of them in Korea.

몰몬교, 예배 통해 미혼 교제 주선
예수그리스도 후기성도 교회 (속칭 몰몬교회)가 미국에서 미혼 남녀 만을 위한 교회를 만들어 화제가 되고 있다.
전통적으로 가정과 결혼을 중시하는 후기성도 교회는 결혼을 통해 “인봉 의식”을 거쳐 영원한 가족 관계를 맺으며 가장 높은 단계의 천국에 갈 수 있다고 믿는다. 이와 더불어 매주 월요일을 “가정의 밤”으로 정해 단합을 도모하는 등, 가족과의 화합을 중시하는 모습을 많이 보여준다.
하지만 교회는 최근 젊은 교인들이 여타 청년들과 같이 결혼을 미루는 풍습이 늘자 조치를 취하게 됐다. 이에 따라 교회는 미혼 남녀가 건전하게 교제할 수 있는 예배 모임을 개설한 것이다.
얼마 전 교회에서 개최된 연차 회의에서도 젊은이들은 결혼을 미루지 말고 헛된 것에 시간을 낭비하지 말라고 지도자들이 강조하기도 하였다.
하지만 이러한 교회의 정책에 대해 비판을 하는 교인들도 있다. 현재 활발한 교회 활동을 하고 있는 33살 Whitley씨는 “몰몬 교회의 문제점은 교제를 하고 결혼하는데 큰 중점을 두면서 사귀는 것 자체를 중요시하지는 않는다”고 밝혔다.
후기성도 교회는 오늘날 전 세계에는 약 1350만 명의 교인들이 있으며 한국에는 8만 명의 회원들이 있다.
