Korean language growing more popular in Taiwan

The test of proficiency in Korean, or TOPIK, is gaining popularity in Taiwan, as more people are showing interest in learning the language.

Ever since the test was introduced in 2005, the number of those taking the exam has been increasing by double-digit percentages. Today the test is taken not only at Taipei, but also at Kaohsiung in order to meet the higher demands.

Organized by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, TOPIK aims to measure the Korean fluency of foreigners or Koreans abroad.

The revenue from the exam is also used for giving out scholarships. Those who conduct research on Korean studies in graduate school are allegeable to apply.

The Korean embassy to Taiwan is to award scholarships to some 22 Taiwanese students as well as seven scholars this month. The number of recipient is increasing every year.

대만에서 ‘한국어능력시험'이 큰 인기를 끌고 있다.

2005년 대만에서 첫 시험이 실시된 후 응시자들이 2009년 27.4%, 2010년 30.9%로 계속 늘어나자 수도 타이베이(臺北)시에서 치러온 시험이 작년에는 남부 가오슝(高雄)시에서도 열릴 정도가 되었다.

이 시험은 외국인과 재외동포의 한국어 능력을 인증하는 시험으로 그간 ‘한국교육과정평가원’이 주관하다가 올해부터 교육과학기술부 산하 ‘국립국제교육원’으로 시행기관이 바뀌어 실시되고 있다.

대만에서는 한국어능력시험을 치르는 사람들이 낸 돈을 수익금으로 삼아 장학 사업까지 실시돼 좋은 평가를 받고 있다.

2006년 시행 한국어능력시험 수익금이 다음해 문화대 한국어학과 발전 기금으로 전달됐으며, 2008 한국어학과 학생 15명, 2009 한국어학과 학생 15명과 한국학 연구학자 5명, 작년엔 한국어학과 학생 17명과 한국학 연구학자 6명에게 각각 장학금이 수여됐다.

구양근(具良根) 타이베이주재 한국대표부 대표는 26일 올해 장학금 전달식을 대표부에서 주재하고 정치대, 문화대, 가오슝대 학생 22명과 한국학 연구학자 7명에게 장학금을 수여했다.

한국학 연구학자에 대한 장학 사업은 대학원생, 교수 등 한국학 연구자들이 제출한 한국학 연구 논문 계획서를 심사해 장학금 지급 대상자를 선정하고 있다. (연합뉴스)
