Hollywood's A-list celebrities bid a star-studded farewell to Oprah Winfrey on Tuesday in a double-taping of her TV talk show that included messages from her fans around the world.
Tom Hanks and then Tom Cruise greeted Winfrey after she came on stage to a standing ovation from the audience of 13,000 gathered for ``Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular.'' Josh Groban and Patti LaBelle sang ``Somewhere Over the Rainbow'' as Winfrey sat in a white chair onstage.
``Was that not the coolest?'' Winfrey said when they finished. She announced in November 2009 that she would end her popular talk show after 25 years.
Madonna told the crowd that she is among the millions of people who are inspired by Winfrey.
``She fights for things she believes in, even if it makes her unpopular,'' Madonna said.
Grammy winner John Legend was beamed in from a school in New Orleans and actress Dakota Fanning led a group of children talking about Winfrey's influence on their lives.
``You always had the power, and that is the message you brought into our lives,'' Cruise told Winfrey.
Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Katie Holmes and Diane Sawyer were there too. Beyonce sang her song ``Run the World (Girls)'' backed by dozens of dancers.
``Oprah Winfrey because of you women everywhere have graduated to a new level of understanding of who we are, of what we are and most of all who we can be,'' Beyonce said before starting her performance.
The stadium was decorated with pictures of Winfrey at seminal moments over the course of her talk show. Boxes of tissues were on scattered seats throughout the audience.
Before the taping, the guest lineup for ``Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular'' was a secret, but the show quickly delivered on promises from Winfrey's producers that the biggest names in Hollywood would be there.
Tuesday's taping will air May 23 and 24, before Winfrey's final show on May 25.
Harpo Productions received more than 154,000 ticket requests for seats to Tuesday's event. Tickets were free and distributed to fans through a lottery. About 13,000 fans were at Tuesday's tapings.
The show also included messages for Winfrey from some not-so-famous admirers. Female American soldiers gave a taped message from Iraq and three female fans from countries around the world came on stage.
Fans started lining up outside hours before the taping started.
Cathy Deters, 52, of Cincinnati drove to Chicago without a ticket, but someone outside the stadium gave her one.
``I don't think anyone could replace Oprah Winfrey,'' said Deters, an energy broker. ``Not many people will have the chance to experience this.''
Celebrities such as Lisa Ling, Carson Kressley, Jessica Seinfeld, Ally Wentworth, Bob Greene and former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley sat in the audience.

윈프리 고별방송에 톱스타 총출동
25년의 인기를 뒤로 한 채 종방을 앞둔 '오프라 윈프리 쇼'의 고별방송에 각계각층의 유명인사들이 총출동했다.
NBA팀인 시카고 불스의 홈 구장 유나이티드 센터에서는 17일(현지시각) 밤 1만3 천여명이 '오프라의 깜짝 초호화 쇼'를 보려고 자리를 꽉 채웠다.
오는 25일로 예정된 마지막 방송에 앞서 23~24일 방영될 특별방송을 위한 녹화였지만 '토크쇼의 여왕'마저도 누가 출연할 것인지 모르는 것으로 알려져 관심이 주목됐다.
이런 기대에 어긋나지 않게 영화배우 톰 행크스와 톰 크루즈, 할리 베리, 가수 마돈나와 비욘세 등 방송이나 개인적 친분으로 윈프리와 인연이 있는 톱스타들이 관 객을 맞았다.
진행자 역할을 한 톰 행크스는 "사랑으로 충만한 오프라의 스튜디오는 여전히 좁다"고 치켜세웠다.
이어 무대에 나타난 마돈나는 주간 시청률이 가장 높은 미국 토크 쇼의 종방을 아쉬워하듯 "오프라는 25년간 정상을 지켜오면서 자신의 힘으로 꿈을 이뤘지만 아직 도 정열적"이라고 칭찬했다.
윈프리에게 위로받은 수백만명 중 한 사람이라는 마돈나는 "그녀는 더 열심히 일하고 독서하고 질문하고 당신이 어디에 있든 공부하라고 용기를 줬다"고 말했다.
가수 비욘세는 "그녀로 인해 이 세상의 여성들이 자신이 누구인지, 무엇을 할 수 있는지 그리고 세계를 끌고 나갈 수 있음을 알 수 있게 됐다"고 의미를 뒀다.
젊은 시청자들을 대표해 무대에 선 10대 여배우 다코타 패닝은 "우리는 스스로 '오프라 쇼 베이비'라고 부른다"고 소개했다.
오프라 윈프리 쇼에 12회 출연한 톰 크루즈와 시카고 불스의 전설로 불리는 마 이클 조던 등이 함께한 이날 녹화에서 가수 스티비 원더는 그녀를 위해 쓴 신곡을 불렀다.
윈프리가 기부한 돈으로 장학금을 받은 애틀랜타 소재 모어하우스 대학생 300명 도 함께 해 의미를 더했다.
아널드 슈워제네거 전 캘리포니아 주지사의 부인 마리아 슈라이버도 출연했지만 남편의 외도 사실은 언급하지 않은 채 "오프라는 나에게 사랑과 지지, 현명함과 진실을 가르쳐 줬다"고 말했다.
미국에서 가장 영향력 있는 여성 가운데 한 명으로 꼽히는 윈프리는 "나는 그저 여성들과 함께하려 했을 뿐"이라며 "이 쇼를 가능케 한 여러분의 사랑에 감사한다"고 화답했다.
이날 쇼는 15만4천명이 방청을 원했지만 추첨을 통해 1만3천명에게 무료 티켓이 배부됐다. 25일 종방 출연자는 아직 알려지지 않았다. (연합뉴스)
