Koreans’ TOEFL ranking drops

Despite a zeal for English proficiency among Koreans, their average TOEFL scores ranked 80th among 163 countries last year, down from 71st in 2009.

According to data from the Educational Testing Services, which administers the English language test, Koreans’ scores averaged 81.

In 2009 they had the same average score, but their standing came in 71st among 157 countries.

The Netherlands topped the list with an average score of 100 followed by Denmark with 99 and Singapore with 98.

India and Philippines are also high among Asian countries, ranking 19th and 35th, respectively.

North Korea ranked 96th, China 105th, Thailand 116th, Japan 135th and Saudi Arabia 153rd.

The international average score in 2010 is 80 with 20.1 in reading section, 19.5 in listening, 20.7 in writing and 20 in speaking.

한국인의 2010년 평균 토플 성적은 81점(120점 만점)으로 시험에 응시한 국가 163개국 중 80위를 차지한 것으로 나타났다.

28일 이익훈 어학원이 토플시험을 주관하는 미국교육평가원(ETS)의 2010년 토플 성적을 분석한 결과에 따르면 iBT(internet-Based Toefl)에 응시한 한국인의 평균 성적은 읽기 21점, 듣기 20점, 쓰기 21점, 말하기 20점 등으로 평균 81점 가량(소수 점 이하 반영)이다.

한국은 2009년 평균 81점으로 157개국 중 71위를 기록한 바 있다.

전세계 응시자 평균 점수는 80점으로 영역별로는 읽기 20.1점, 듣기 19.5점, 쓰기 20.7점, 말하기 20점 등이다.

가장 점수가 높은 국가들은 네덜란드(100점.1위), 덴마크(99점.2위), 영국(96점 .6위), 독일(95점.7위) 등 유럽권 국가였고 아시아권에서는 영어를 공용어로 사용하는 싱가포르(98점.3위), 인도(92점.19위), 필리핀(88점.35위) 등의 점수가 좋았다.

홍콩(81점.80위)은 한국과 점수가 같았고 북한(78점.96위), 중국(77점.105위), 태국(75점.116위), 일본(70점.135위), 사우디아라비아(65점.153위) 등은 우리보다 성적이 낮았다.
