One of the oldest copies of “the Nuremberg Chronicle” has been found during a fundraising event for a museum in Utah, according to reports.
The German textbook, which was published in 1493, is an illustrated world history book that relates to the Bible. Printed by Anton Koberger, it is one of the most luxurious books of the 15th century.
The owner claimed that he received the book from his great uncle. The book had been in the attic for many years, he said.
Antique dealer, John Windle, said the book would have been sold at a million dollars in intact condition. But, as two thirds of the pages are missing, it is likely to fetch less than $50,000.
Moreover, there are already hundred copies worldwide. Yet, thanks to relatively well preserved pages, it is expected that the book can last for another half millennium.

최근 유타주 샌디에서 열린 박물관 기금모금행사에 한 남성이 일부 페이지가 없어진 뉘른베르크 연대기 한 권을 기증하겠다며 가져온 것.
1493년 안톤 코베르거의 인쇄로 발간된 뉘른베르크 연대기는 창조의 순간부터 시작하는 세계사 책으로 15세기 초기 가장 화려한 삽화책 가운데 하나로 꼽힌다.
책 주인이 종조부로부터 물려받은 이 책은 수십 년 간 다락방에서 먼지로 덮여 있었다.
책을 넘겨받은 서적상 켄 샌더스는 “미국 서부 내륙지방에서 500년 된 책이 발견됐다는 사실에 깜짝 놀랐다”고 말했다.
그는 목재 펄프지가 아닌 코튼지에 인쇄한 책이어서 말 그대로 솔기가 터졌음에도 불구하고 남아있는 페이지들은 잘 보존돼 있다며 “잘 보관하면 500년은 더 견딜 수 있을 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
하지만, 세계 각지에서 유통 중인 뉘른베르크 연대기가 수백 권인 것으로 추정되는데다 유타주에서 발견된 책은 전체 페이지의 3분의 2 가량이 유실된 상태여서 금전적 가치는 그리 크지 않을 것으로 보인다.
샌프란시스코의 고서적상 존 윈들은 책이 훼손되지 않고 새것 같은 상태라면 가치가 100만 달러에 달할 수 있지만, 이 책은 훼손됐기 때문에 5만 달러에 미치지 못할 것으로 보인다고 말했다.
