HANOI (Yonhap) -- A growing number of Vietnamese students are studying the Korean language at university, mainly to work at Korean firms operating in their country, local sources said Tuesday.
More than 2,000 students are studying Korean at 10 universities nationwide, including Vietnam National University (VNU) in Hanoi and another national college in Ho Chi Minh, the sources said.
About 150 professors and instructors, including some 50 native speakers from South Korea, teach the classes.
Among the 10 universities, the College of Foreign Languages at VNU, Hanoi, was the first to open a department for Korean language studies in 1996, graduating more than 300 students over the past 15 years. Many of the graduates have found jobs at South Korean firms or in areas related to the country, with some preparing to go to South Korea for further studies.
On average, just one in three applicants receives admission to the Korean language department each year, but students are drawn to the various rewards of graduating from the course. Korean firms will often hire them for a monthly salary of more than US$500 and sometimes sponsor study opportunities in South Korea.
The South Korean government has also stepped in to encourage such moves, providing reference materials to universities that teach Korean and expanding scholarship programs in South Korea for graduates, the sources said.

베트남 대학서 한국어과 인기 '짱'
베트남 대학가에서 한국어학과 인기가 높은 것으로 나타났다.
26일 현지 대학 소식통에 따르면 현재 베트남 대학들 가운데 한국어과가 설치된 학교는 하노이국립대교, 훼대학, 달랏대, 호찌민국립대 등 10개 대학이며, 재학생 수는 2천여명인 것으로 집계됐다.
또 교수 수는 현지인 교수 100여명과 이들을 지원하는 한국인 교수와 강사 50여 명 등 모두 150여명인 것으로 파악됐다. 한국어과가 설치된 이들 대학 가운데 최고 명문은 수도 하노이의 하노이국립대 산하 외국어대.
지난 1996년 최초로 한국어과를 설치한 이 대학은 지금까지 300여명의 졸업생을 배출했다. 이 대학의 교수진은 쩐티흐엉 주임교수 등 14명의 교원이 재직 중이며, 이 가운데에는 한국국제협력단(KOICA) 봉사단원 3명과 객원교수 1명 등 4명의 한국인들도 포함돼 있다고 학교측은 설명했다.
특히 이 대학의 한국어과에서는 한국어뿐만 아니라 한국학에 대한 교육도 진행 중이다. 교과과정에는 한국 지리, 한국학, 한국사, 한국고전.근.현대문학 등의 과목 도 개설돼 있다.
또 한국어에 대한 전문적인 지식을 강화하기 위해 한국어 음운론, 한국어 어휘론, 한국어 문법 등의 수업도 한국에 유학한 교수들에 의해 이루어지고 있다. 이 학 과 1회 졸업생으로 연세대에 유학한 흐엉 교수에 따르면 졸업생 대부분들은 한국 관련 기업에 취업하거나 한국 유학을 준비 중이다.
입학 시 평균 3대1 이상의 높은 경쟁률을 보이는 한국어과의 인기가 높은 것은 한류의 영향도 있지만 무엇보다 취업이 쉽기 때문이다.
베트남에 투자진출하는 한국 기업 수가 급증하면서 이 학과 출신들은 월평균 50 0달러 이상의 높은 급여를 받을 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.
또 일부 업체의 경우 현지 전문인력 장기 양성을 위해 한국어 졸업생들에게 한국으로 장기 연수나 유학 기회까지 제공하는 것도 인기를 끄는 또 다른 요인으로 분석됐다.
이에 따라 한국 정부는 단독으로 또는 진출기업들과 함께 한국어과가 설치된 대 학에 자료와 교재를 적극 제공하고, 우수 졸업생들에게는 한국으로의 국비 유학 기회 확대 등 다양한 지원책을 마련해 실시 중이라고 소식통은 전했다.
