A woman in Gwangju requested a police investigation after she received a can of butane gas from an online seller instead of the iPod she had paid for.
Kim ordered an iPod from an online second-hand vendor who offered it at half the market price.
After a phone call with the seller, the woman sent half of the money to the vendor’s account. But what Kim received was a can of butane gas. Kim tried to reach the seller but the phone number no longer existed.
It is the latest in a spate of online fraud cases.
“One must be careful when dealing with direct sellers who court clients with low prices,” police said.
In recent online fraud cases, customers reported that they received empty alcohol bottles, stacks of newspapers or bricks instead of the goods they paid for.
In a typical on-line transaction for used goods in Korea, the buyer first sends the money to a broker or Internet operator, who then would resend the money to the seller only after confirmation from the buyer.

그러나 김씨에게 배달된 상자에는 아이팟이 아닌 부탄가스가 덩그러니 놓여 있었고 김씨는 곧바로 판매자에게 전화를 걸었지만 통화불통이었다.
사기를 당했다는 사실을 깨달은 김씨는 판매자의 메일 주소 등을 경찰에 증거자료로 제출하고 수사를 의뢰했다.
최근들어 인터넷 상거래 과정에서 계약된 물품 대신 벽돌이나 신문뭉치, 심지어 소주병을 넣어 보내는 등 사기사건이 끊이지 않고 있어 소비자들의 각별한 주의가 요구된다.
경찰 관계자는 25일 “인터넷 거래 시 상대방이 저렴한 가격을 미끼로 직거래를 요구하는 것을 특히 조심해야 한다”고 말했다.
