State inspectors called for the defense ministry to sack the head of a state-run defense research institute over allegations of taking bribes, according to the Board of Audit and Inspection on Saturday.

Kim Koo-sub, the head of the Korea Institute for Defense Analysis, is accused of receiving 2 million won ($1,850) from an Army colonel, who is identified only by his surname Cho,for promoting him in the institute, the inspectors said.

However, Kim denied the allegation and plans to ask the BAI to re-investigate into the allegation.

"Two years ago, when my wife was bereaved of her father, Colonel Cho sent a fruit basket to my house and the money was found in the basket," Kim said. "My wife tried to return the money, but Cho adamantly refused to take it, saying it was condolence money."

Kim, who is scheduled to finish his term on May 6, insisted that the allegation is part of a conspiracy to frame him.
