About 184 staff at Thermal Ceramics in France have gone on strike against what they called ‘Aglo Saxon Imperialism,’ according to reports. The London based company was established in 1856 and is a division of Morgan Crucible Company.
Thierry Juvin, the workers’ representative, said “We say hello in French but then communication stops.
“We have to have someone who translates everything into English, and then anything our boss says has to be translated into French. This makes dialogue extremely slow, if not impossible,” he added.
The workers managed to discuss wage and working conditions, but could not fully overcome language barriers.
According to the workers, they had gone for more than two decades without a strike before the new English-speaking manager arrived. Since then, there have been about three walkouts.
Pierrick Dumont from France General Conference of Labor, or CGT, told reporters: “I do not think it is up to us to make the effort to speak English. We are French workers based in France.”
Meanwhile, Diane Gaillot, the CEO of the Thermal Ceramics in France, said that the company is currently looking for another director who can speak French.
