Singapore gov’t to match unmarried singles

Singapore’s government is planning to help unmarried citizens to find their match.

The government is concerned about the country’s low fertility rate and the fact that the younger generation is reluctant to get married and have children.

The Straits Times reported Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s minister for community development, youth, and sports, said, “We need to help them find the right partner and also see what other needs they feel need to be addressed so they can settle down early and start a family.“

The specifics of the matchmaking plans are yet to be announced. However, the government is very concerned about fertility rates, and therefore will be discussing the moves thoroughly in parliamentary debates.

Meanwhile, the percentage of single women aged between 25 and 29 years old reached 62 percent in 2010, showing a big increase compared to just 45.5 percent a decade ago.
