Wounded ship captain says 'thank you' after completely regaining consciousness

The captain of a South Korean freighter, who was shot during a rescue operation against Somali pirates, completely regained consciousness Monday and expressed thanks for the support that South Koreans have rallied for him.
The health of Seok Hae-kyun, the captain of the 11,500-ton Samho Jewelry, has drawn wide national attention since South Korean naval special forces on Jan. 21 stormed the ship seized by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea, killing eight hijackers.
Seok completely regained consciousness earlier Monday and is now breathing on his own.
"My conditions have improved a lot thanks to the concern that all of the people have shown for me. Thank you," Seok told reporters at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, south of Seoul.
"After learning that our seven (South Korean) crew members are safe, I thought that my strategy worked. I feel good."
Seok, 58, suffered serious gunshot wounds during the high-stakes operation, while 20 other crew members -- seven South Koreans, two Indonesians and 11 from Myanmar -- were released unharmed.
He is credited with helping the rescue operation run successfully. Officials said the captain stalled for time by steering the ship in a zigzag after armed pirates ordered that the vessel move toward the Somali coast.
Seok underwent several surgical operations before and after his arrival at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon. He has sporadically recovered consciousness since he was put on a respirator.
"Though it was not a big deal, I think I fulfilled my duties as commander," Seok said of his efforts to save the ship. "Because I'm the commander, I risked my life. The only thing that was in my head at the time was that we should not cause the country damage."
Doctors and officials at the hospital said earlier in the day that Seok has now opened his eyes without a relapse, recognizes his family and breathes on his own after doctors gradually weaned him off a respirator.
"Seventeen days have passed since the second operation on Feb. 11, and Captain Seok can now breathe on his own. He can also easily speak although he is still recovering from his bronchus operation," said hospital director Yoo Hee-seok. "Three wounds in his abdomen have neatly healed and conditions in his fractured joints incurred during the shooting have been slowly improving."
Although Captain Seok's health was looking up, Yoo said he will need more time to fully regain consciousness as he abruptly brought up unrelated topics and had a difficult time recollecting family affairs when he woke up Monday morning.
According to other hospital staff members, Seok began to speak, though very slowly, on Friday night and inquired about his credit card, cellphone and other personal belongings seized by Somali pirates.
Meanwhile, South Korean prosecutors said last week that they pressed six charges, including maritime robbery and attempted murder, against the five pirates involved in the hijacking.
They also said Friday that they had discovered that some of the pirates had also participated in the kidnapping of a sister ship last year, which was released after a huge ransom was paid.
Investigators suspect that 23-year-old pirate Arai Mahomed shot Captain Seok at point-blank range, but he still denies this allegation. Under South Korean law, the pirates could be sentenced to at least five years in prison for hijacking the ship and life imprisonment or even death for firing at the captain.
Seok has been suffering pneumonia and other lung problems as well, according to the hospital officials.

아주대병원 3층 중환자실에서 취재진을 맞은 석 선장은 총상을 입고 병원으로 이송될 때보다 다소 살이 빠진 것을 제외하고 얼굴색이 좋아 보였다.
취재진이 "한번 웃어주세요"라며 카메라를 향해 포즈를 부탁하자 석 선장은 "못생겼어도 잘 찍어주세요"라며 웃음과 함께 농담까지 했다.
석 선장은 현재 심경에 대해 "국민 모두가 신경써 준 덕분에 많이 좋아졌다. 저도 빨리 회복하려고 노력하고 있다"고 말했다.
이어 "큰일을 한 것은 아니지만 지휘관으로서 의무와 도리를 다한 거죠. 지휘관이니까 목숨 걸고 (배 고장을 선원에게 지시하고, 소말리아 해역으로 배가 진입하는것을 지연하도록)한 것이고, 국가에 손해를 주면 안된다는 생각뿐이었다"고 했다.
그는 이런 마음으로 해적에게 "죽이려면 죽이라고 했다"고 말하기도 했다.
해적에게 총격받은 순간에 대해 "밤에 작전이 시작됐다. 어두워서 누가 쐈는지 기억을 못한다"고 했다.
잠시 의식을 회복했던 지난 3일 당시도 기억을 못한다고 했다.
다만, 매트리스를 뒤집어쓰고 바닥에 엎드려 있는데 바닥을 스치면서 총탄이 튀어 올랐고, 처음 총상을 입은 순간에는 정신을 잃지 않았다고 했다.
그는 "이후 총격이 오갈 때 '여기서 눈 감으면 난 죽는다. 작전 끝날때까지 정
신을 잃지 말자'고 되뇌었다"며 긴박했던 구출작전 순간을 떠올렸다.
청해부대원을 확인한 뒤 (총격으로 당해 피가 흐르는) 왼팔을 보고 나서 "헬기를 불러주세요. 손을 다쳤습니다"라고 말했으며, 공기를 집어넣는 도구로 팔을 감싸 응급처치를 하고서 헬기를 타고 병원으로 이송됐다고 설명하기도 했다.
오만 현지 병원에서 도착해 의료진이 "아주 안좋다. 위험하다"는 말을 듣고 정신을 잃었다고 덧붙였다.
해적들이 죽이겠다는 협박은 계속 했으나 언론에 알려진 것처럼 해적에게 상습적으로 구타를 당하지는 않았다고 말한 석 선장은 목숨 걸고 선원에게 쪽지 등으로 배를 고장내라고 지시하는 등 교란작전을 편 것에 대해 "적의 수중(해역)에 배가 들어갈때까지는 선장에게는 마음대로 못하니까"라고 말했다.
이날 국내 이송 후 처음으로 이날 언론에 모습을 보인 석 선장은 기관지를 절개해 호흡관을 부착한 목과 손, 팔다리 등 온몸이 자유롭지 못한 상태였지만 총상을 입지 않은 오른팔은 손짓도 하며 비교적 움직이 자유로왔다.
"의식을 차린 뒤 아내에게 제2의 생명을 살아가겠다고 다짐했다"고 말한 석 선장은 가장 먹고 싶은 음식을 묻자 "병원 수칙대로 식사해야죠"라고 말하면서도 "회가 가장 생각나요. 산낙지도 먹고 싶고.."라며 미소를 지었다.
부인 최씨는 남편이 있는 중환자실에 갖다 놓은 라디오를 들으며 무료함을 달랬다고 했다.
