'King's Speech' crowned Oscars monarch

HOLLYWOOD, (AFP) - British royal drama "The King's Speech" was crowned Oscars winner on Sunday, taking three of the top Academy Award prizes at the climax of Hollywood's annual awards season.

The movie took best picture, best director and best actor for Colin Firth as a stammering King George VI, helped by an Australian voice coach to rally wartime Britain.

It also won for best original screenplay, giving the film four Oscars overall -- the same as hi-tech thriller "Inception," and one more than Facebook movie "The Social Network," which had been tipped as possible best film winner.

The movie's screenwriter, David Seidler, used his acceptance speech to jokingly thank Queen Elizabeth II, among others, as well as stutterers everywhere.

"I would like to thank her majesty the queen for not putting me in the Tower of London" for putting swear words in George VI's mouth. "And I accept this on behalf of all the stutterers throughout the world.

"We have a voice, we have been heard," he said, echoing a key phrase from the movie.

"The Social Network," which had been nominated in seven Oscars categories, ended up going home with only three, and none of the major ones: film editing, original score and adapted screenplay.

"Inception," starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a hired hand who penetrates people's dreams to order, won four Oscars: cinematography, visual effects, sound mixing, sound editing.

Natalie Portman won best actress for her role in disturbing ballet thriller "Dark Swan."

Boxing movie "The Fighter" already had two gongs -- best supporting actor for Christian Bale, and best supporting actress for Melissa Leo, who had both been frontrunners in their category.

In other prizes, "Toy Story 3," the third instalment of the family-friendly franchise starring Woody, Buzz Lightyear and co. won best animated feature Oscar as expected.

And the best foreign film prize went to "In a Better World" by Denmark's star director Susanne Bier, who vanquished movies from Algeria, Canada, Greece and Mexico.

The Oscars is the culmination of the multi-billion movie industry's awards season and has been preceded by months or frantic campaigning for the coveted gold statuettes handed out Sunday night.

'킹스 스피치'는 27일(이하 현지시간) 오후 미국 로스앤젤레스 할리우드 코닥극 장에서 열린 '제83회 아카데미상 시상식'에서 작품상, 감독상, 각본상, 남우주연상 등 4개 부문을 받았다.

'킹스 스피치'는 말더듬이 국왕 조지 6세(콜린 퍼스)가 언어 치료사(제프리 러 쉬)를 만나 자신의 콤플렉스를 극복하는 과정을 그린 작품으로, 올해 최다인 12개 부문 후보로 올랐었다.

미국 페이스북 창업자 마크 주커버그를 소재로 한 영화 '소셜 네트워크'가 전미 영화비평가협회, 골든글로브에서 작품상 등 주요 부문을 수상했지만 '킹스 스피치' 의 기세를 꺾지 못했다.

8개 부문 후보에 오른 데이비드 핀처 감독의 '소셜 네트워크'는 편집상, 각색상, 음악상 등 3개 부문에서 수상했다.

크리스토퍼 놀런 감독의 인셉션은 촬영상, 시각효과상, 음향효과상, 음향편집상 등 기술부문의 4개 상을 싹쓸이했으며 팀 버튼 감독의 '이상한 나라의 앨리스'도 미 술상과 분장상 등 2개 부문을 받았다.

'킹스 스피치'의 콜린 퍼스와 '블랙 스완'의 내털리 포트먼은 예상대로 남녀주연상을 차지했다. 퍼스와 포트먼은 골든글로브와 미국배우조합(SAG)에서 남녀 주연상을 받아 시상식 이전부터 가장 강력한 수상후보로 거명된 바 있다.

데이비드 O. 러셀 감독이 연출한 '파이터'에서 어머니와 아들로 출연한 멜레사 레오와 크리스천 베일도 글든글로브와 미국배우조합(SAG)에 이어 아카데미에서도 남 .녀주연상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다.

최우수 외국어상은 글든글로브에서도 최우수외국어상을 수상했던 덴마크의 수잔 비에르 감독이 연출한 '인 어 베터 월드'가 차지했다.

지난해 애니메이션으로는 가장 많은 매출을 올린 픽사의 '토이스토리 3'는 장편 애니메이션상과 주제가상 등 2개 부문을 수상했다.
