Foot-and-mouth disease breaks out in N. Korea: RFA

North Korea has reported an outbreak of the livestock foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease on its soil to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Radio Free Asia said in a report on Thursday.

North Korea's agricultural ministry sent a letter to the U.N. organization on Wednesday, notifying it of the outbreak of the contagious animal disease and asking for emergency support, the media reported, citing a U.N. official.

The official did not mention the region of the outbreak nor the number of livestock that showed FMD symptoms, it added.

The organization will send experts to North Korea "at an appropriate time" to help the reclusive communist country contain the FMD disease, it said.

South Korea has been also battling with the FMD disease that has spread nationwide in the last three months and caused over 3 million livestock to be culled. (Yonhap News)

北, 구제역 발생 FAO에 통보"

"긴급 구호지원도 요청"

북한이 유엔 산하 식량농업기구(FAO)에 구제역 발생 사실을 알리고 긴급 구호를 요청했다고 미국 자유아시아방송(RFA)이 10일 전했다.

유엔 관계자는 이 방송에 "북한 농업성이 9일 외교 서한을 통해 FAO에 구제역 발생 사실을 전격 통보하고 긴급 구호 지원을 요청했다"고 말했다.

이 관계자는 그러나 북한 내에서 구제역이 발생한 지역이나 감염된 소와 돼지의 수 등 구체적 피해 상황에 대해서는 언급을 피했다.

RFA는 "북한의 지원 요청에 신속히 대응하기 위해 FAO 측이 준비작업에 착수했 다"며 "FAO는 국제 수의 전문가 등을 적정한 시점에 북한에 파견해 구제역 확산을 통제키로 했다"고 전했다.

외신들은 작년 말부터 북한내 구제역 발생 가능성을 보도했지만, 그동안 북한이 발병 사실을 국제기구에 통보하지 않아 추측만 무성한 상태였다.

북한에서는 2007년 구제역이 발생해 소와 돼지 3천여 마리가 살처분 됐고, 2008 년에도 100건 이상의 구제역이 발생했다고 RFA는 전했다. (연합뉴스)
