Colombian cops catch cocaine carrier pigeon

A drug-smuggling pigeon which played a role in transporting drugs into a prison has been caught by police in Bucaramanga, Colombia, the British Telegraph reported.

According to police, the carrier was trying to fly into the jail with a bag containing drugs, including 40 grams of marijuana and five grams of cocaine. But the hapless bird was exhausted by the task and it could not complete its mission.

“We found the bird about a block away from the prison trying to fly over with a package, but due to the excess weight it could not accomplish its mission,” the daily quoted Jose Angel Mendoza, the local police officer in charge of the incident, as saying, adding, “This is a new case of criminal ingenuity.”

With the view of distributing mobile phone Sim cards, pigeons had reportedly been trained by inmates of the jail in the region.

현지 경찰에 따르면, 수감자들은 오래전부터 휴대폰에 사용되는 심카드를 몰래 감옥으로 가지고와 사용하려는 목적으로 오래 전부터 비둘기들을 훈련시켜 왔던 것으로 알려졌다.
