SBS to air “Is UFO coming to Earth?” on Saturday

SBS is set to air a special program on UFOs on Saturday, drawing keen attention from those interested in the question of aliens’ existence.

The broadcaster’s weekly investigative program, “We Want to Know,” plans to explore the issue that has long generated speculation, rumors and conspiracy theories across the world.

For the latest episode, the program’s investigations team has decided to scrutinize the issues surrounding Unidentified Flying Objects and extraterrestrial life by combing through existing documents. 

The production team of the episode titled “Are UFOs coming to Earth?” aims to shed light on the possibilities in which humans encounter extraterrestrial life by analyzing UFO-related documents released by New Zealand and Britain.

A string of UFO-related documents have been released to the public, sparking intense debates and rumors.

On Dec. 22, the New Zealand military released hundreds of previously classified reports of UFO sightings and alien encounters.

The 2,000-pages, dating from 1954 to 2009, include comments by citizens, military personnel and pilots, many of which describe their direct encounters with objects or figures resembling UFOs or extraterrestrial life.

One interesting sighting took place in 1978 when a television crew allegedly witnessed strange lights off South Island town of Kaikoura, New Zealand.

In March 2007, the French government joined the fray, releasing more than 1,650 files related to UFOs.

The program will air on Jan. 15 at 11:10 p.m.

SBS '그것이 알고 싶다'는 오는 15일 밤 11시10분 UFO(미확인비행물체)의 실체를 분석한 'UFO는 오고 있는가?'를 방송한다.

지난달 22일 뉴질랜드 국방부는 1954~2009년 UFO에 대해 조사한 자료들을 공개했다. 2천페이지 분량의 자료에는 UFO 사진을 비롯해 외계인으로 추정되는 그림과 뉴질랜드 공군, 민간항공기 조종사 등 UFO 목격자들의 진술이 포함됐다.

특히 '카이코라' 사건에 대한 보고서는 UFO 연구가들의 이목을 끌었다.

1978년 12월 뉴질랜드 남섬 카이코라 해안에서 항공기에 탄 방송사 취재팀에 의해 거대한 발광체가 목격됐다. 당시 사건은 영상이 존재하고 탑승인원 5명 전원이 목격한 데다 관제탑 레이더에도 물체가 포착돼 UFO의 존재를 뒷받침하는 증거로 주목받았다.

이 같은 외국정부의 UFO 관련 파일공개는 이번이 처음은 아니다.

1998년 영국 국방부를 시작으로 2007년 3월 프랑스 정부가 1천650건의 UFO 파일을 공개했고 덴마크, 스웨덴, 브라질 정부도 UFO 관련 자료를 잇따라 공개했다.

제작진은 영국, 뉴질랜드 현지 취재를 토대로 각국 정부가 UFO 관련 자료를 공개하는 이유와 외계인의 출현 가능성을 분석한다.
