The Australian Embassy in Seoul said Monday it has initiated water safety campaign at Sangcheon Elementary School in northeastern Seoul last week to minimize water-related risks involving children.

“The Australian Embassy is proud to collaborate with Lifesaving Society Korea to help educate young South Koreans about how to minimize risks when having fun in water,” Australian Ambassador to Korea James Choi said.

“I hope this helps raise awareness of the risks and encourages all Koreans, from school children to parents, to take steps to ensure they remain safe while enjoying an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Deputy head Ian McConville joined the embassy’s support program on Nov 8.

McConville participated in the Portable Pool program put together by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and Lifesaving Society Korea and distributed workbooks on swimming for survival. The Australian Embassy and Lifesaving Society Korea co-produced the workbook.

Credited for its contribution to reducing the number of drowning accidents of Australian youth, the Royal Lifesaving Society Australia has been active in educating students and communities for over 30 years, the embassy said.
