Samsung Electronics said on Feb. 19 it will live broadcast the MWC 2019 Barcelona’s official media channel using its 5G network to show off its cutting-edge technology.

The Korean tech giant said it will work with the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, which hosts the world‘s largest mobile show slated for Feb. 25-28, formerly known as the Mobile World Congress.

Samsung will air GSMA’s Mobile World Live TV on big screens throughout the Fira Gran Via venue and about 280 hotels in Barcelona, as well as stream the event live globally.

The company said its 5G solutions are composed of a radio access unit and a 5G router, which will power the content shot in high definition without buffering.

“For 2019, we are excited to broadcast using Samsung’s 5G network, enabling a true seamless transmission without latency,” Justin Springham, GSMA’s director of media content and broadcast, said in a release.
“Mobile World Live TV and Samsung will be at the forefront of offering immersive user experiences thanks to this 5G broadcast.”

Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone and memory chip maker, has been ramping up its investment in 5G technology and related equipment to expand its foothold in the global network market.

It currently only has a 3 percent share in the 5G equipment market, lagging far behind Huawei’s 28 percent and Ericsson‘s 27 percent as of 2017, according to market researcher IHS Markit.

The company has set a goal of capturing a 20 percent share in the 5G equipment market by 2022, and it is well positioned in major markets amid a US boycott of 5G equipment of the industry leader Huawei.
