A man charged with beating the floor leader of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party was released on Thursday after a court delivered a suspended prison term.

The Seoul Southern District Court sentenced the 31-year-old assailant to eight months in prison suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 80-hour community service.

The judge took into account that the defendant is showing remorse and that the victim does not want him to be punished.

The man was arrested and indicted for punching Rep. Kim Sung-tae, the LKP floor leader, in the face on May 5.

Kim was on a hunger strike in front of the National Assembly calling for a special counsel investigation into an opinion rigging scandal. He suffered minor injuries. (Yonhap)
