Moon's approval rating slips for second consecutive week

President Moon Jae-in's approval rating dropped for a second consecutive week, a poll showed Friday, as North Korea's abrupt suspension of dialogue and toughening rhetoric raised uncertainties over his peace efforts.

In a survey conducted by Gallup Korea, the president's approval rating came to 76 percent this week, down 2 percentage points from a week earlier.

The reading also marks a 7 percentage point plunge from two weeks earlier, when the number reached a record high of 83 percent following his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on April 27.

The latest survey was conducted Tuesday through Thursday, involving 1,004 adults across the country.

Those who disapproved of the way the president managed state affairs accounted for 14 percent of all respondents, up 1 percentage point from last week.

The drop in Moon's support came amid an abrupt suspension of high-level inter-Korean dialogue that had been set for Wednesday.

Pyongyang said the talks would be suspended indefinitely unless Seoul changes its behavior, citing an on-going joint military exercise of South Korean and US troops.

Seoul has called for an early resumption of talks, noting the suspension may undermine the agreement on peace and denuclearization reached at the Moon-Kim summit.

Still, it also notes the suspension may be a natural part of negotiations the North is expected to hold with the United States in the near future.

Kim is set to hold an unprecedented summit with US President Donald Trump in Singapore on June 12.

The weekly survey showed Seoul's ruling Democratic Party too suffered a slight setback this week, with its own approval rating slipping 2 percentage points to 51 percent, also the second decline in a row.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party's approval rating remained unchanged from a week earlier at 11 percent, while that of the splinter Bareunmirae Party dipped 2 percentage points to 6 percent. (Yonhap)
