애플과 자회사인 럭스뷰테크놀로지가 지난 10년간 한국에서 30여건의 마이크로LED 특허를 출원했다. 이는 글로벌 디스플레이 시장에서 독점적인 지위를 가진 삼성과 LG의 차세대 기술 확보를 견제하기 위한 움직임으로 보인다.
19일 특허청이 코리아헤럴드에 확인해 준 바에 따르면 애플은 지난 10년간 국내에서 마이크로LED 관련 특허를 11건, 럭스뷰는 23건을 출원했다. 럭스뷰는 애플이 2014년 마이크로LED 기술을 개발하려고 인수한 회사다.
애플이 출원한 특허는 마이크로LED의 칩구조, 마이크로LED를 기판에 전달하는 방범과 제어시스템 등이다.
특허청 관계자는 “애플이 다수의 특허를 국내에서 출원한 이유는 삼성과 LG 같은 한국기업의 차세대 디스플레이 기술 확보를 견제하기 위함일 것”이라고 말했다.
삼성과 LG는 글로벌 LCD, OLED 시장에서 수년간 독점적인 지위를 유지해왔으며, 애플 또한 자사의 주력제품인 아이폰의 패널을 한국기업에 의존해왔다. 특히, 최근에 출시한 아이폰X의 OLED 패널은 전량 경쟁사인 삼성전자로부터 공급 받았다.
이처럼 경쟁사에 신제품 전략을 드러낼 수밖에 없는 애플이 수년 전부터 독자적으로 차세대 디스플레이 기술을 준비해온 일은 놀랄만한 일이 아니다.
블룸버그 통신에 따르면 애플은 마이크로LED를 이용해서 자체 디스플레이를 설계하고 생산하고 있다. 미국 캘리포니아 본사 근처의 제조 공장에서 약 300명의 엔지니어가 애플워치에 탑재되는 스크린을 시작으로 소량의 마이크로 LED 제품을 개발하고 있다고 매체는 전했다.
삼성과 LG 또한 마이크로LED시장 확대를 대비해 관련 기술을 개발하고 있다.
특허청에 따르면, 삼성전자는 지난 10년간 24건의 마이크로LED 관련 특허를 출원했고, 삼성디스플레이는 24건, LG전자는 29건, LG디스플레이는 35건의 특허를 출원했다.
삼성전자는 지난 1월 ‘CES 2018’에서 마이크로LED를 활용한 146형 모듈러 TV를 세계 최초로 공개했고, LG전자는 오는 9월 독일 베를린에서 열리는 국제가전박람회 IFA 전후로 마이크로LED 디스플레이를 출시할 계획이다.
특허청에 따르면 마이크로 LED 기술 관련 특허출원은 2012년 19건에 불과했지만 2015년 62건으로 늘었고, 지난해에는 120건으로 2015년의 2배 가까이 증가했다.
김종찬 특허청 디스플레이기기심사팀장은 “마이크로 LED 디스플레이는 차세대 디스플레이 기술로, 앞으로 관련 산업 발전과 일자리 증대에 기여할 것”이라며 “국내 기업들이 기술을 선점하고 시장 경쟁력을 갖추기 특허권을 우선 획득해 우위를 확보하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다”고 강조했다.
마이크로 LED는 칩 크기가 5∼100μm(마이크로미터)로, LED를 초소형으로 구현함에 따라 기존 백라이트 용도와 달리 LED 칩 자체를 화소(픽셀)로 활용할 수 있는 만큼 적용 범위가 크게 확대될 것으로 예상한다.

According to Bloomberg on Monday, Apple is making significant investment in the development of next-generation Micro-LED screens, using a secret manufacturing facility near its California headquarters to design and produce its own device displays.
Samsung and LG are also gearing up for the development of the new panel technology.
During the same period, Samsung Electronics applied for 24 patents of Micro-LED technology in Korea. Samsung Display applied for 24 patents, LG Electronics 29 patents and LG Display 35 patents.
Early this year, Samsung Electronics unveiled the world’s first 146-inch television using Micro-LED panels during the Consumer Electronics Show. In response, LG Electronics also reportedly plans to unveil its Micro-LED display during the IFA consumer electronics show in September in partnership with LG Display and LG Innotek.
Micro-LED screens feature miniature light-emitting diode arrays, which make future gadgets slimmer and brighter, and consume less power.
The number of Micro-LED-related patent applications rose 10 times from 12 in 2012 to 120 last year in Korea. Overall, the total number over the last 10 years stood at 358, with the number of applications from Korean large firms at 119 and foreign firms at 116.
