Prosecutors requested an arrest warrant Wednesday for former Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin over allegations that he engaged in covert cyber activities aimed at influencing public opinion in favor of the past conservative government.

They also filed for a writ against Lim Kwan-bin, an ex-deputy defense minister, in the same case.

They face charges of abuse of power and violation of military laws that ban political interference, according to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. Lim is also charged with bribery on suspicions that he accepted kickbacks from a military official in charge of the operations.

Kim headed the ministry from 2010-2014, while Lim served his term from 2011-2013.

Prosecutors believe that they also regularly reported to the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae on the operation.

Prosecutors are investigating massive political maneuvers led by the military and spy agency in which officers were assigned to post Internet comments to sway public opinion in support of the Lee Myung-bak government.

They have denied any wrongdoing. (Yonhap)
