Stocks open nearly flat as investors take breather

South Korean stocks opened nearly flat Thursday as the market took a breather after the main bourse renewed its record highs for the fourth consecutive session.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index edged down 2.2 points, or 0.09 percent, to 2,554.27 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

Market kingpin Samsung Electronics inched up 0.07 percent, with its smaller rival LG Electronics increasing 1.95 percent. LG Display also added 1.86 percent.

No. 1 carmaker Hyundai Motor, in contrast, shed 0.93 percent, and its sister Kia Motors moved down 0.85 percent. Auto parts maker Hyndai Mobis remained unchanged from the previous session.

The local currency was trading at 1,113.60 won against the US dollar, up 0.90 won from the previous session's close. (Yonhap)
