Hyundai Motor Group will invest $5 million in a US-based vehicle research center, the company said Wednesday.

The Korean carmaker’s research and development unit, Hyundai America Technical Center Inc., signed a long-term partnership agreement with the American Center for Mobility on Tuesday, local time, it said.

Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor Group will provide financial support worth $5 million won for the ACM’s project to build a R&D and test center in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan.

The $5 million contribution from Hyundai brings ACM’s fundraising total to $101 million to develop the testing site at Willow Run, the company added.

Other companies currently supporting the ACM project include AT&T, Toyota and Ford.

“Hyundai’s investment supporting ACM strengthens our long-term commitment to the advancement of safety and mobility through automated vehicle technology,” said Andy Freels, HATCI president.

Hyundai plans to test sensor technology, communication between vehicles, infrastructure and how connected vehicle systems function in different weather situations, the company said.

The first phase of construction will be completed in December this year, and the rest by 2019, according to the company.
