Daewoo E&C creates book tunnel for Delight Square

Newly designed walls have been created in an underground tunnel that connects a subway station and a shopping mall in Seoul, according to Daewoo Engineering & Construction on Tuesday.
The underpass, which connects Hapjeong Station on Subway Lines No. 2 and No. 6 and the shopping center Delight Square, features shelves filled with replicas of books. Daewoo E&C, which built Delight Square, has dubbed it a “book tunnel.”

The shelves that cover both sides of the tunnel as well as parts of the ceiling will lead pedestrians from the station to Kyobo Bookstore on the second basement floor. They also depict eateries located in the shopping center constructed in western Seoul by the third-largest builder in South Korea.
The walls also feature trick art, such as a stairway into a wonderland and the high-rising stem of a bean plant.

Daewoo E&C gained permission from the capital city’s subway line operator Seoul Metro to carry out the project, the firm said.
Daewoo E&C is seeking to have empty space near the bookstore leased to facilities such as drugstores, pet shops and family restaurants.
