[더인베스터(코리아헤럴드=김영원 기자)] 13일 업계 관계자에 따르면 애플이 삼성의 갤럭시 노트와 같이 스타일러스를 탑재한 스마트폰을 출시 하기 위해 준비 중이라고 한다.

해당 업계 관계자는 “애플이 스타일러스를 탑재한 아이폰을 2019년 출시할 계획을 세우고 있다,” 라고 밝히며, “현재 몇몇 스타일러스 개발사와 접촉을 하고 있는 상태,”라고 말했다.

스타일러스 도입에 반대했던 스티브 잡스가 2011년 작고 한 이후 애플은 아이러니하게도 스타일러스 개발에 열을 올렸다. 스타일러스에 대한 특허 신청을 했으며, 2016년에는 애플 펜슬이라는 아이패드 프로용 스타일러스를 출시하기도 했다. 그리고 태블릿PC 뿐만 아니라 스마트폰 등 모든 애플의 기기에서 동일한 사용자 경험을 제공하려는 움직임을 보여왔다.

애플은 스마트폰과 아이패드 용 iOS운영시스템에 마크업(Markup)과 노트(Notes) 기능이 탑재했으며, 이 기능들은 스타일러스를 이용해 노트나 메모를 작성 할 수 있는 기능이다.

스타일러스의 종류는 여러 가지이다. 배터리가 없이 독립적으로 사용될 수 있는 패시브 스타일러스, 건전지가 펜에 들어가게 되는 액티브 스타일러스, 그리고 자기장을 이용하는 EMR스타일러스가 대표적이다. 삼성의 갤럭시 노트8은 일본 와콤 사의 EMR방식의 스타일러스를 사용하고 있다.

한 업계 관계자는 애플이 여러 가지 스타일러스 중 “EMR보다 가격이 낮고 성능이 뛰어난 슈퍼캐패시터(Supercapacitor) 스타일러스를 사용할 가능성이 높다,”고 말했다.

슈퍼캐패시터는 배터리와 같이 에너지를 저장하는 소형 칩으로, 배터리보다 적게는 수십 배 빠르게 기기를 충전 할 수 있어 전기 차와 IT기기들의 에너지 저장장치로 이용되기도 한다.

그는 또한 최근 출시한 아이폰X의 터치 패널의 기술적 문제에 대해 지적하며, 더욱 정확하고 세밀한 스타일러스를 지원하기 위해서는 성능이 개선된 모바일 칩셋의 필요성에 대해서도 이야기 했다.

“아이폰X에서는 AI, 안면인식, 음성 인식, 이미지 인식 등 새로운 기술들을 지원하지만, 칩셋은 예전 모델을 약간 개선한 수준,”이라고 밝히며, “정밀한 스타일러스 터치 기술을 위해서는 새로운 디자인의 칩이 필요할 것,”이라고 말했다.

Apple mulls stylus for iPhone

[THE INVESTOR] Apple is mulling something that its late founder Steve Jobs had outright rejected -- adding a stylus to its iPhone, according to industry sources on Oct. 13.

Jobs never hesitated to rant how much he hates styluses, famously saying almost a decade ago: “God gave us 10 styluses. Let’s not invent another.”

But sources say Apple engineers have recently been working on a new iPhone that comes with a digital pen.

“Apple is preparing to launch the phone as early as 2019,” an industry source told The Investor on condition of anonymity. “It is also in talks with a couple of stylus makers for a partnership.”

It has been widely rumored for long that Apple is considering deploying digital pens for its phones and other mobile devices, having filed a slew of related technology patents over the past years.

In 2016, the firm debuted the Apple Pencil stylus for the iPad Pro tablets. It has also continued introducing new handwriting functions for the iOS operating system such as Notes and Makeup tools.

Apple’s latest move seems to be mimicking its archrival Samsung Electronics that has upgraded the S-Pen stylus for its Galaxy Note phablet in close partnership with Japanese digital pen maker Wacom since 2011.

While the Note pen is based on electro-magnetic resonance technology that requires additional panels under the screen, sources say, the iPhone stylus is likely to adopt a supercapacitor stylus type due to price benefits.

“A supercapacitor type is cheaper to make compared to the EMR stylus. It also offers a more pen-like feel,” another source said.

Along with the stylus technology, the source said, the current A-series mobile chip should undergo a drastic upgrade to better support handwriting functions of the planned stylus.

“Apple had to compromise on some touch performance of the latest iPhone X largely due to the less advanced chipset,” he added.
