The United Nations aviation body has strongly condemned North Korea's continued ballistic missile launches, citing concerns about the safety of civil aviation, Seoul's foreign ministry said Saturday.

The International Civil Aviation Organization Council expressed its "strong condemnation" of North Korea's provocative acts at its 212th session, which was held at the agency's headquarters in Montreal on Friday.

"It was noted that the DPRK missile launches had occurred over international air routes and without prior notice being given, causing significant concerns to the safety of international civil aviation in the region," said a statement.

The DPRK is the abbreviation of North Korea's full name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The council urged North Korea to comply with relevant international rules in a bid to "prevent the recurrence of such potentially hazardous activities."

"It was further noted that in response to these incidents, the President of the Council had sent several letters to the DPRK to urge the country to comply with established international provisions," it added.

North Korea has not given the ICAO advance notice of its missile tests, including the launches of two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July.

"It was the first time that the ICAO Council released a statement on North Korea's missile tests at its session," said an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "This shows the international community's resolute will to not condone North Korea's violation of international rules." (Yonhap)
