The PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, the stage for the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games, will be completed over the weekend, the event's organizers said Friday.

PyeongChang's organizing committee said the 35,000-seat venue in PyeongChang, 180 kilometers east of Seoul, will be finished Saturday, 22 months after the start of its construction.

The pentagonal shape of the venue represents the five objectives of PyeongChang 2018, which have been labeled Cultural Games, Environmental Games, Games for Peace, Economic Games and ICT Games.

The PyeongChang Olympic Stadium will also host the opening ceremony for the Winter Paralympics on March 9 and its closing ceremony March 18.

The venue, the central part of PyeongChang's Olympic Plaza, has seven floors aboveground and one level underground.

After the competitions, the stadium's 35,000 seats will be removed and it will house an Olympic memorial hall and an athletic training center. (Yonhap)
