Koreans spent least time on beaches, most money: survey

South Koreans spent the least time on the beach while on vacation but spent the most money among tourists from various countries, a survey showed Thursday.

The average South Korean spent just 4.2 days soaking up the sun at beaches compared with the average duration of 7.2 days, according to the survey of 15,363 people from 17 countries by the world's largest online travel agency, Expedia.

The other countries represented in the survey were the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, India and Thailand.

An average South Korean tourist, on the other hand, spent $607 per day, the largest sum among the nationalities questioned by Expedia.

By contrast, US travelers spent an average of $532 a day and Japanese vacationers shelled out $482 in a day.

South Koreans spent about 22 percent of their outlay on food and beverages, 21 percent on lodging, 14.9 percent on air tickets and 9.7 percent on tour programs.

The average South Korean spent $36 on liquor, which accounts for 5.9 percent of their total expenditure.

South Koreans spent $153 on shopping and body care ahead of going on a trip to a beach destination, compared with an average of $126 spent by tourists from other countries.

Waikiki in Hawaii was the most popular beach, with 62 percent of South Korean tourists giving it good marks, followed by Seminyak in Bali, Indonesia, at 29 percent and Paradise Beach in Greece at 24 percent. (Yonhap)
