An opposition lawmaker submitted the signatures of some 210,000 citizens to the Constitutional Court on Monday, demanding President Park Geun-hye step down as the court prepares to rule on the impeachment of the scandal-hit president.

Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo of the splinter People's Party handed over the signatures, gathered online and offline over the last month, to the court's civil service office.

"I urge the Constitutional Court to be aware of the people's wish, and make a prompt and fair decision," Ahn told reporters at the courthouse in downtown Seoul.

"The National Assembly has faithfully and sincerely followed people's order based on the constitutional procedures," he said.

"Now people's eyes have moved from the parliament to the Constitutional Court."

On Friday, the National Assembly passed the impeachment motion of President Park, embroiled in an influence-peddling scandal, by 234 to 56 and sent the court a petition to review the case. The nine-member court has up to six months to make the final decision on her fate.

If the court confirms Park's impeachment, South Korea must hold a presidential election within two months. (Yonhap)
